What’s the story?

During the latest edition of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer provided us with an update regarding Rey Mysterio’s current status with the WWE and what the future holds for the legendary masked luchador.

In case you didn’t know…

Former WWE World Heavyweight Champion and Intercontinental Champion Rey Mysterio made his first WWE appearance for the first time in over two years when he entered the 2018 Royal Rumble match as a surprise entrant. Mysterio’s return was well received among the WWE Universe and the master of 619 also received a great reception in overall from the WWE fan base, following his return.

The heart of the matter

Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer recently reported that the inside speculation regarding Rey Mysterio’s current status with the WWE is that the former World Champion will sign some sort of deal with the WWE within the year 2019, if not this year.

However, Meltzer believes that Mysterio’s isn’t signing a full-time deal anytime soon and will rather instead sign a part-time contract with the WWE within the next year. Apparently, the likeliest possibility from here onwards for Mysterio is to pen down a deal much like his colleague and close friend Chris Jericho, who has been making one-off sporadic appearances for the WWE, while working for the New Japan Pro Wrestling as well.

Meltzer believes that Mysterio’s deal will keep him with the WWE for a portion of time before he eventually heads off to focus and finish on his other projects outside of the WWE.

What’s next?

Much like Chris Jericho, Rey Mysterio has also shocked the world this past week when he appeared in a vignette in New Japan Pro Wrestling and laid out a challenge to NJPW veteran Jushin “Thunder” Liger at the upcoming NJPW: Strong Style Evolved. Mysterio is now scheduled to make his NJPW debut against Liger on the 25th of March at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, California.

Author’s Take

As noted, Mysterio’s WWE return at the Royal Rumble was well received among the WWE Universe and I believe that upon his next return to the WWE, we are finally going to witness some of the biggest WWE dream matches come true. Rey Mysterio vs AJ Styles is certainly something that pops up in everyone’s mind.
