Rey Mysterio is set to appear at the Greatest Royal Rumble

What's the story?

Yesterday, we reported that Rey Mysterio would be appearing at WWE's Greatest Royal Rumble event set to take place in Saudi Arabia later this month.

Now, Wrestling Observer Newsletter has given a possible update regarding Rey Mysterio's future WWE status.

In case you didn’t know…

The Master of the 619 made a shocking appearance in the Men's Royal Rumble match earlier this year to a huge ovation from the crowd. Going by the crowd reaction, what was initially supposed to be a one-off deal turned into a contract negotiation for his WWE comeback.

However, an unfortunately timed injury and Mysterio's reluctance to return supposedly put the negotiations on hold. In the meantime, the former WWE Superstar appeared for Japanese promotion New Japan Pro Wrestling.

The heart of the matter

WON has now reported (H/T: WrestlingInc.) that Mysterio's appearance at the Greatest Royal Rumble will once again be just a one-off deal. Apparently, as of this writing, WWE and Mysterio have not yet been able to come to an agreement regarding his full-time return.

Additionally, it has been reported that even if the former World Heavyweight Champion does sign a deal with WWE, he would not be making regular TV appearances, due to commitments with other promotions such as NJPW and Arolucha through the summer.

What's next?

Mysterio is next set to appear in the 50-man match at the Greatest Royal Rumble. The event will take place on Friday, April 27th at King Abdullah International Stadium, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Author's take

It was a pleasant surprise seeing Mysterio return at the Royal Rumble back in January. Though he looked to be in phenomenal shape, Mysterio is now 43 years old and a full-time WWE schedule might not be what he wants at this stage in his career.

Regardless, we do hope he returns to WWE as soon as possible!
