From the WWE Rumor Mill: Original plans for Dean Ambrose before injury revealed

What did WWE have planned for the Lunatic?
What did WWE have planned for the Lunatic?

What's the story?

The WWE Universe was ecstatic when The Shield reunited in 2017. Unfortunately, Dean Ambrose's injury would derail the momentum of the faction, forcing a rather premature end.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, as reported by Ringside News, the original plan was to turn Dean Ambrose heel, and have him feud with Roman Reigns. It seems like Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins will take up the feud, going forward.

In case you didn't know...

When The Shield first ran wild all over WWE, it seemed like they were an unbreakable unit. This is until Seth Rollins would turn on his faction mates, and break up the stable with a chair shot heard around the world.

The second Shield reunion was an ill-fated one, with Roman Reigns falling sick, having to be replaced by the returning Kurt Angle. The trio would have to break up again, after Dean Ambrose's injury.

The heart of the matter

So, according to The Wrestling Observer, the original plan was for Ambrose to turn. This would make sense, because Ambrose hasn't really had a singles heel run and his personality translates wonderfully into a heel persona, in our opinion.

Ambrose vs. Reigns would have been the main program, after Reigns defeated Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 34. It seems like we may be in for a heel turn from Seth Rollins instead, if the rumours are to be believed.

What's next?

Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins will battle it out in the Elimination Chamber with 5 other men. The winner of the match will face Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 34. As for Ambrose, he's on the road to recovery but we don't have an update with regard to his eventual return.

Author's take

I would be game for heel Ambrose, very honestly. Ambrose has been the most underutilised of all the Shield members and could have benefited from a change in character.

An Ambrose vs. Reigns feud would have felt fresh too.
