Why is WWE splitting SmackDown's most popular act?
Why is WWE splitting SmackDown's most popular act?

What's the story?

Last week on SmackDown Live, we saw Lana indicate to Rusev that Aiden English was holding him back. As one would expect, it caused a furore on social media, considering Rusev Day is SmackDown Live's hottest act right now.

According to Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE may be splitting up Rusev Day because Aiden English does not have a look that WWE likes. Thanks to Cageside Seats for the update.

In case you didn't know...

Lana is Rusev's real-life wife and former valet. Lana tried her luck as a singles superstar on SmackDown Live, but could not really get over in the incredibly stacked women's division.

At the same time, Rusev found an unlikely ally in Aiden English, formerly of the tag team unit- The Vaudevillains. Rusev Day quickly became the most popular act in WWE, getting a thunderous ovation from the WWE Universe week after week.

The heart of the matter

So Dave Meltzer speculates that Aiden English's look is something that stunts Rusev Day's growth to a lower mid-card tag team unit at best. With English gone from the equation, Rusev has the potential to ascend to the top of the card as a singles act, with Lana by his side.

This probably means that there's an element of truth to the story that is playing out on WWE TV currently. Meltzer speculated that with Lana at his side, Rusev could be pushed into the main event picture very soon indeed.

What's next?

It remains to be seen if Rusev and English will indeed split or not. Maybe Rusev will not heed Lana's words and Rusev Day will swerve us all. Judging by the reaction of the WWE Universe, that's what most fans want as well.

Author's take

I've personally felt that the oddball duo of Rusev and English are perfect for one another. English's singing is an integral part of the Rusev Day act and without him by his side, Rusev may actually take a big step back.

At the same time, I do want Rusev pushed to the moon.
