From the WWE Rumor Mill: Update on Rey Mysterio's status with WWE

Rey Mysterio's WrestleMania dreams hang in the balance
Mysterio returned to WWE at the Royal Rumble PPV back in January

What's the story?

According to the latest update by PWInsider, Rey Mysterio is set to pay a visit to some doctors in Alabama, where his injury will be evaluated before going ahead with his rumoured WWE contract signing.

In case you didn’t know…

Rey Mysterio made his grand return to WWE as the #27 entrant in the Men's Royal Rumble match back in January. Initially, the appearance was supposed to be a one-off deal, but going by the hugely positive crowd reaction, Mysterio reportedly was set to negotiate a part-time contract with WWE for his return.

Unfortunately, earlier this month, Mysterio suffered a partial tear of his left bicep while wrestling a tag match for the US promotion Northeast Wrestling.

The heart of the matter

As suggested by reports, the former World Heavyweight Champion will be visiting doctors in Birmingham, Alabama later this week, in order to get his bicep injury evaluated. This pending evaluation will probably determine Mysterio's WWE contract status going forward.

Initially, the injury was not believed to be a very serious one, with the rehab time estimated to be around 2-3 months. However, it now looks like WWE want to have a thorough evaluation of the injury, before going ahead with any negotiations.

Even if Mysterio does eventually sign on with the company, it is believed that he would not be returning full time, and would make only part-time appearances. Triple H is believed to be the point person from WWE's side to handle the negotiations.

What's next?

The Master of the 619 was previously scheduled to face pro wrestling veteran Jushin Thunder Liger at an NJPW event, set to take place on March 25th at Long Beach, California. However, it has now been reported that he has been pulled from the event, and is being replaced by Will Ospreay.

His status with WWE will probably be determined after the evaluation of his injury. Watch this space for more updates from Sportskeeda.

Author's take

Mysterio being pulled from the NJPW event later this week might just be another indication that he's headed towards WWE.

Here's hoping Mysterio makes his return to WWE as soon as possible!
