What's the story?

It has been rumored for a while, but it looks like an official announcement regarding WrestleMania 35 is coming on Friday!

The NFL's New York Giants announced today that a "major event" is coming to MetLife Stadium - the heavily rumored venue for next year's event.

In case you didn't know...

WWE has hosted WrestleMania in the MetLife Stadium before, back in 2013. WrestleMania 29 was also held at the home of the Giants in East Rutherford, New Jersey - although the event was billed as WrestleMania NY/NJ.

The event featured John Cena defeating The Rock to win his 11th WWE Championship as well as The Undertaker defeating CM Punk and Triple H defeating Brock Lesnar in a No Holds Barred match to save his career.

The event drew 80,676 fans, making it the third highest attended event in WWE history of just behind WrestleMania 32 and WrestleMania III. The event was the highest grossing live event in WWE history, amassing a monumental $72 million.

The heart of the matter

MetLife Stadium has been the expected venue for WrestleMania 35 for a while after Barstool Sports reported that WWE had decided on returning to the arena earlier this year. Philadelphia and Detroit were also heavily considered.

The rumored date is Sunday, April 7th, 2019 - coincidentally the same date as WrestleMania 29 in the same building. The announcement is expected at a press conference on Friday.

It's also noted that only WrestleMania will run in the venue that week, with the Hall of Fame, NXT Takeover, RAW and SmackDown being planned for the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

What's next?

Well, we don't have too long to wait. Here's hoping we see a similar set-up to WrestleMania 29!

Author's take

Well, this is a pretty cool announcement. WrestleMania 29 was a pretty great event all-around and a return to the New York-New Jersey arena is arguably overdue for The Grandest Stage of Them All considering WWE seems to favor the Barclays Center for other big four events. The MetLife Stadium is a pretty monumental place and having access to the Barclays Center and maybe even MSG for the weekend could make this an incredible event considering that's where WrestleMania I, X and XX were all staged. Now just to hope the build-up and eventual card live up to the venue!
