What's the story?

WWE's Royal Rumble pay-per-view took place this week and saw the in-ring return of a former World Heavyweight Champion. Rey Mysterio made a surprise return to WWE during the Men's Royal Rumble Match, as the 27th entrant.

Since his return, rumours have run rampant about a possible permanent return to WWE for the masked luchador. According to reports by PW Insider, the main issue which has held up negotiations between Rey Mysterio and WWE is the nature of his role in the company, should he return.

In case you didn't know...

Mysterio made his in-ring return to WWE in the Men's Royal Rumble Match as the 27th entrant. He was able to eliminate Adam Cole from the Rumble and was part of the last six superstars present in the Rumble alongside Randy Orton, John Cena, Roman Reigns, Finn Balor and the eventual winner, Shinsuke Nakamura.

He was eliminated from the match by Balor, but not before he had an impressive showing. It later became known, that this appearance was a one-off, and Rey Mysterio is yet to sign a contract with WWE.

According to reports, Mysterio was in negotiations with Impact Wrestling recently to sign a contract and appear in the Impact Zone.

The heart of the matter

According to PW Insider, the reason Rey Mysterio has not signed a contract with WWE is the nature of the role the company has in mind for him.

While Mysterio wanted a part-time role for himself due to his age, the company wanted him on a full-time contract.

As previously reported, Rey Mysterio had said that it was unlikely he would ever wrestle a full-time schedule again, so if WWE continues to pressure him to take on such a role, it might just be a dealbreaker.

What's next?

The negotiations between Mysterio and WWE are still ongoing. Stay tuned to Sportskeeda for the latest updates about Mysterio's WWE status.

Author's take

The masked Luchador has not let age slow him down, and it might be to WWE's benefit to offer him a part-time contract in the near future before he can sign with any other company.
