From the WWE Rumour Mill: The Mae Young Classic winner will not be receiving the vacant NXT Women's Championship

Unfortunately, the immediate plans for the NXT Championship are not clear yet
Nobody is ready for Asuka or her championship, it seems!

If you watched NXT this week, you saw the undefeated Asuka relinquish her NXT Women's championship after an undefeated streak that lasted 523 days, saying to her fans that that she would be headed to either Raw or SmackDown Live, in the months that follow. In the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Bryan Alvarez asked Meltzer if he expected the Mae Young Classic finals to be for the vacated NXT Women's Championship.

Meltzer said that he believed that it won't, based on a video from William Regal in which he said that he's thinking it over for several weeks. He said that while initial plans had indicated that the NXT Women's Championship could be awarded to the winner of the tournament, plans are no longer afoot anymore:

I know that it was under consideration. But I've heard nothing about it being a situation.

However he did admit that the video could be a swerve and that the NXT Women's Championship could indeed be awarded to the winner of the tournament. Join us at Sportskeeda Wrestling as we bring you all the action from the Mae Young Classic, next Tuesday.

As we write this, it is unclear what the future plans are for the championship and also who Asuka's successor will be.

The finals of the Mae Young Classic will take place after SmackDown Live airs, next Tuesday, live on the WWE Network. MMA star Shayna Baszler takes on Japanese veteran Kairi Sane in the tournament finals. Expect it to be a star studded event indeed.
