Getting Ready To Rumble: Potential 2019 Royal Rumble Winners- Becky Lynch

When The Man comes around
When The Man comes around

In this new series, we look at the chances that WWE superstars have of winning the 2019 Royal Rumble match.

Last time, we looked at the chances of Charlotte Flair.

This time we assess the chances of her former best friend turned bitter rival; The Man, Becky Lynch.

Becky Lynch is the most popular superstar in the WWE today. She must definitely be considered a strong contender for the title of most popular superstar in the entire industry.

Despite her immense popularity, Becky Lynch's accomplishments do not match up to Charlotte Flair's, or even Nikki Bella's. She is a two-time Smackdown Women's Champion, won the first ever main roster Last Woman Standing Match, was the first female draft pick for Smackdown Live, and participated in the first-ever woman's TLC match. She also spent last year's WrestleMania as an inconsequential part of the pre-show battle royal. Indeed, before she adopted her 'The Man' persona, Becky lost most of her important matches.

Never mind, all that is in the past now. She is set to face Asuka at the Royal Rumble for the Smackdown Women's Championship, a match that I think she will lose.

But the Royal Rumble match? That's a whole other ball game.

Case for Becky Lynch winning the 2019 Women's Royal Rumble match

The winner of the Royal Rumble match is in one of the more important stories on the road to WrestleMania. It is also an enormous honour. It is an acknowledgement that the winner deserves to be in focus all the way up to WrestleMania. Logic dictates that unless they are a World Champion at the time, the most popular superstar on the roster wins the Royal Rumble match.

The most popular superstar on the roster is Becky Lynch, and it isn't even close. She has caught lightning in a bottle with her 'The Man' character. Her fans are almost as passionate as Daniel Bryan's 'Yes Movement' fans. Crowds regularly chant for her even when she is not in the ring.

Becky Lynch is the most logical choice to win this match because she is the audience's choice.

Also, WWE would do well to remember what happened in 2014 and 2015 when Daniel Bryan did not win the Royal Rumble match. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Case against Becky Lynch winning 2019 Women's Royal Rumble match

Champions don't compete in the match

There are a few legitimate reasons for Becky Lynch not winning the 2019 women's Royal Rumble match.

Firstly, it is possible that she defeats Asuka to regain her Smackdown Women's Championship. World Champions do not participate in the Royal Rumble match. Becky Lynch cannot win the match if she is not in the match.

Secondly, the story may be served better if Becky Lynch is not in the match, even if she loses to Asuka. Part of the reason Becky's rise was so meteoric was because it was organic. The fans supported her because what she said was true; she had been passed over repeatedly whilst others got opportunities. Why not lean into this sentiment?

Becky Lynch not being a part of the match would create a groundswell of support for her, and release a whole lot of vitriol on the WWE. If done properly, it could artificially recreate the Daniel Bryan 'Yes Movement' storyline, and make her an even bigger babyface.

Who would she challenge at WrestleMania 35?

Becky Lynch is facing Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania even if she doesn't win the 2019 Women's Royal Rumble match.

It is the only match to make. There is no other option. Becky Lynch must face 'Rowdy' Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania 35.

The rationale for this match is simple; they are the two most popular women in the WWE today. It is not quite The Rock versus Stone Cold Steve Austin, but the rationale is the same; put your two biggest stars in a match together on the biggest stage possible.

This match has been anticipated ever since Becky Lynch was forced to miss out on Survivor Series. Ever since Becky Lynch invaded RAW and beat up Ronda Rousey, this is a match that fans have wanted to see. The delay has only built up anticipation.

This match is so big that it has a very good chance of being the first ever women's match to main event a WrestleMania.

The Verdict: Must be considered the favourite to win this match. Look for fans to reject anybody else who wins.
