Sienna could not stress on the importance of memorable personalities in wrestling enough on the podcast

What's the story?

Impact Wrestling's Knockouts Champion, Sienna, appeared on the Arm Drag Takedown with Pollo Del Mar (h/t Huffington Post) podcast and gave her opinion on what is important in pro-wrestling.

According to her, she realised a child that 'larger-than-life' personalities make a character memorable more than wrestling prowess.

In case you didn't know...

At Slammiversary 2017, Sienna finally became the Knockouts Champion when she was able to defeat Rosemary. She was the GFW Women's Champion at the time, having already defeated Christina Von Eerie in April.

Since then defended her title against Gail Kim, and will soon be putting it on the line again as she heads into Bound For Glory.

The heart of the matter

Sienna was frank on the podcast about what she felt made a wrestler a Superstar and memorable to an audience. She stressed heavily on the importance of having a character and personality that would help you to stick out of a crowd.

She said the realisation came when she was drawing Trish and Lita as a child, and when it came to some other wrestlers, she could not remember them well enough to draw. She compared not having a memorable personality to being a default character in a wrestling game.

Sienna criticised the wrestlers in the independent scene, as she felt that for a large number of them, their character and personality were of little importance.

“In the independent scene, lots of people have their moves down, they’re very athletic and very impressive. But you can tell their character and charisma and mic skills are the lowest priority for them – or at least lower on the list than everything else."

She was quick to say that not all of them were like that, but the number of people with this belief was large.

She then went on to talk about Impact Wrestling, where she said that the women were focused and had personalities, making them unique.

“It is more difficult for me to work with others who don’t have characters. I feel like I have to pull something out of her that maybe isn’t even there.”

Fortunately for her, Impact Wrestling has had a history of some extremely unique women personalities, with the likes of Awesome Kong and ODB. The current roster also boasts of such personalities like Laurel Van Ness and 'The Demon Assassin' Rosemary.

What's next?

Sienna is set to defend her title against two competitors, Gail Kim and Allie, in a Triple Threat Match. Tarryn Terrel was also supposed to be in the match but left the company, possibly due to injury (concussion).

Author's take

What Sienna has said about the need for characters in wrestling cannot be stressed enough.

Looking back at the history of pro-wrestling, some of the best stars have been extremely colourful personalities, with the likes of 'Macho Man' Randy Savage, Shawn Michaels, Chris Jericho, Stone Cold, Trish, The Rock, The Undertaker, and Kane coming to mind immediately.
