It isn’t always easy for an independent wrestling promotion to gain a lot of traction with local fans. This is especially true when you’re trying to build it in a relatively small city like St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. However, that hasn’t stopped several promotions from existing over the years and one promotion, in particular, has been raising the bar consistently: New Evolution Wrestling (NEW).

Promotion celebrating its second anniversary in a big way

This promotion, spearheaded by Travis Canning, was established in 2015, and despite a somewhat limited local market initially, it has accomplished much in its just-under-two-year-long run. Its feats include consistently sold out shows, a television deal for their show NEW: Evolved, and a roster of dedicated and talented performers—and that’s only the tip of the iceberg.

On December 29, 2017, NEW will be showcasing its two-year anniversary show NEW YEAR TWO at the CLB Armoury in St. John’s. and at this show, the audience will get to see the debut of none other than former WWE Superstar “Hurricane” Helms, who will be headlining the show in a match against The American Patriot.

Championship title on the line

Other matches on the card include a three-way elimination match for the NEW Heavyweight Championship between current champ “Wild Thing” Tony King, “Dynamite” Dylan Davis and “The Redefinition” Scott Humphries, while Interprovincial Champion “The Maverick” Matt Wheeler competes in a non-title, dog-collar match against “Bulldog Brandon Hynes”.

Additionally, a six-man tag team match for the NEW tag team championship will take place between current champions Psycho Mitch and Justin Lock with Dirty Don Martini versus The Family Bizness (Blake Maxwell, Buck Gotch and Jon Biz), and local fan favourite TJ Taylor faces the returning Max Power.

For the indie wrestling fan, NEW could be the new One to Watch

In a community where people often wait until the last minute before making up their minds before coming to an event like this, it's impressive that the show is already almost sold out more than two weeks before it happens -- but that's actually been pretty par for the course with New Evolution Wrestling.

So, if you're a fan of indie wrestling and you love a success story, this is a group I suggest keeping your eyes on because there's no telling just how much they're going to Evolve.
