Indie Rumors: Billy Corgan purchases the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA)

Billy Corgan has made his first move since the messy Anthem court proceedings...

What’s the story?

Mike Johnson from PWInsider just released an exclusive story about Billy Corgan’s next step in professional wrestling. Johnson confirms that Corgan has purchased the National Wrestling Alliance.

This deal would mean Corgan has the rights to the name of the company, the rights, trademarks, as well as possession of the championship belt and the right to use it.

In case you didn’t know...

Founded in 1948, The National Wrestling Alliance would be regarded as one of the largest independent promotions in the world. Major promotions have used the recognised NWA World Heavyweight Championship, such as World Championship Wrestling and Impact Wrestling, during their early days.

The heart of the matter

Within this acquisition, there are many questions which will need answering. The major areas that need clarification include the effect of the status of their video on demand service and what Corgan plans to do with the promotion.

It is well-known that Corgan has a vast love for the business, so this acquisition could just be a way for him to be involved with professional wrestling again. However, it is also possible that Corgan could look to secure a national broadcasting deal to compete with WWE, Impact Wrestling, and Ring Of Honor.

What’s next?

We should expect an official statement from Corgan over the next couple of weeks. Hopefully, he will offer some more details about what drove him to acquire the National Wrestling Alliance and what he plans to do with the company going forward.

Author’s take

I really wish control of Impact Wrestling would have gone to Billy Corgan. I feel like it would have been a better product than what we have under Anthem so far.

However, if Corgan was running Impact Wrestling, the Hardy’s may not be in the WWE, Bully Ray wouldn’t be in Ring Of Honor, and so on. At least there is a bright side to that story and now Corgan is back in the game. I really hope he can get a nationally syndicated television deal of some sort.
