What's the story?

During the latest episode of Defiant Wrestling, former WWE Superstar Austin Aries was crowned the promotion's new champion as he won the Defiant Championship following a hard-fought battle against Bullet Club member, Marty Scurll.

In case you didn't know...

Austin Aries is a former WWE Superstar, who is mostly known for his time on NXT and the 205 Live Cruiserweight division. Aries, who made his debut in 2016 for Vince McMahon's promotion, was released from the company in 2017 following reports of him being frustrated with the company's creative team.

Since leaving WWE, Aries has performed for many top Indy promotions including House of Hardcore, WSW, and also Defiant Wrestling for whom he made his debut earlier this month. Aries was dubbed as the 'hottest free-agent' by Defiant manager Stu Bennett and it was also confirmed that the 39-year-old signed a six-month contract with the British promotion.

The heart of the matter

Following his recent debut for Defiant Wrestling earlier in the month, Aries has now taken the promotion by storm within a very short time period as he won the company's top championship last night in Birmingham, England. The former TNA World Champion faced off against "The Villian" Marty Scurll on the night and defeated the Bullet Club member to win the Defiant Championship.

Aries, who also recently turned heel on Defiant Wrestling by aligning himself with Mark Haskins and Chris Ridgeway, became the 7th superstar to win the Defiant Title (which was previously known as the WCPW Championship).

This was also Aries' second championship win in the indies and his second big achievement since leaving the WWE -- the first being the WSW Championship which he won earlier this month as well.

What's next?

Austin Aries continues to impress his way through the Independent scene and will seemingly work for various top indy promotions in the future. He is currently signed to Defiant Wrestling for six months but is also allowed to work for other companies as well.

Author's Take

There is no doubt that Austin Aries is one of the top superstars on the planet today and seeing him winning championships once again is truly a feel-good moment. I certainly do hope to see him work for a global company in the future, most notably Ring of Honor.
