Even though the Royal Rumble is three months away, we already know a few names will appear in the premium live event. Some such names are NXT and TNA star Joe Hendry, as well as the legendary John Cena, who will compete at the Royal Rumble for the final time in his career.

Another WWE legend who could show up at the Rumble and come out of retirement after a decade is John Bradshaw Layfield. JBL posted a photo from the gym, sharing a positive update on his condition and hinting at a comeback.

"First time in a couple of decades, pain free and able to work out. Got stem cells from Integrated Pain Management in New Jersey-and my first workout, hard to believe I’m able to do things I couldn’t do for years. Comeback? Yeah, biggest since the resurrection," he wrote on his X/Twitter account.

The 57-year-old former wrestler and commentator spent nearly three decades with WWE (1995-2023), winning multiple championships, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2021. His last in-ring appearance was in the 2014 Royal Rumble when he entered at No.24 and got eliminated by Roman Reigns.

What is JBL's status with WWE ahead of the Royal Rumble 2025?

With the Royal Rumble taking place on February 1, JBL remains under contract with WWE. He has signed a WWE Legends deal with the company, meaning he could still wrestle and have various roles in the company.

At the same time, though, he is free to join other promotions if he has no other obligations with WWE. Thus, he has appeared in AAA and TNA, but during his appearances there, he was not allowed to use any of the gimmicks related to his persona, including the JBL ring name.

He was referred to as John Layfield and had to adopt a different persona compared to his WWE role. The last time he appeared on WWE TV was back in February 2023, when he stepped down as Baron Corbin's manager. JBL was the manager of Baron Corbin for six months (October 2022-February 2023) and has been on a hiatus since then.
