Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes has a few friends in the Stamford-based company. Former WWE writer Freddie Prinze Jr. believes one of them has dropped a hint that he would betray The American Nightmare last Friday on SmackDown.
The superstar in question is none other than Kevin Owens. The Prizefighter has helped Rhodes in his feud with The Bloodline over the past few months. The American Nightmare rewarded him with a title shot at Bash in Berlin. While many predicted that the 40-year-old would turn heel on his friend in the German capital, he did not. Instead, Owens raised Rhodes' hand after failing to dethrone him.
Despite this, former WWE writer Freddie Prinze Jr. believes the former Universal Champion would probably turn heel. He claimed The Prizefighter dropped a hint that he would betray Rhodes by not helping him last Friday on SmackDown when the latter had a confrontation with The Bloodline. Instead, The Street Profits were the ones who came to The American Nightmare's aid.
"I feel the match itself wasn't even about a championship. Everybody knew Cody was gonna win. The match was to plant a seed, which all their stories are now seeds, long-term stories of Kevin Owens turning heel and becoming a bad guy. And if you also noticed on Friday Night SmackDown, he did not run out and help Cody when The Bloodline went out there, that was The Street Profits with B-Fab," Prinze Jr. said. [39:46 - 40:07]
Cody Rhodes will defend his title this week on WWE SmackDown
After successfully retaining his Undisputed WWE Championship against Kevin Owens at Bash in Berlin, Cody Rhodes will put his title on the line on Friday's SmackDown.
The American Nightmare will lock horns with the self-proclaimed Tribal Chief Solo Sikoa in a Steel Cage Match. Rhodes previously defeated the former NXT North American Champion at SummerSlam following interference from Roman Reigns.
With Bad Blood approaching, analyst Peter Rosenberg said Kevin Owens could turn heel this week on the blue brand to set up a rematch against Rhodes at the upcoming premium live event. It would be interesting to see if that would happen.
