WWE News: Netflix to produce a Wrestling themed show

Netflix to produce a show based on G.L.O.W.

International streaming giant Netflix have started working on a wrestling-themed series. The series will circle around the 1980's all-female wrestling promotion, Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, commonly abbreviated as G.L.O.W.

G.L.O.W. during its run in the 80's enjoyed a cult-like following. Its colourful characters, over-the-top comedy sketches, and strong women were instrumental in the show's success. The show's roster used to comprise of actresses, models, stuntwomen, and dancers, who hoped to get into show business through wrestling.

The show ran strong for four seasons eventually ending in 1989.

G.L.O.W., the Netflix show, will be helmed by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch and executive producer Jenji Kohan. Kohan is popularly known as the creator of the successful Netflix Original, Orange is the New Black. The show has been ordered for ten episodes, and the casting process seems to have completed too.

The superstars currently roped in for this project are Alison Brie (Community, Bojack Horseman), Marc Maron (Girls), Kimmy Gatewood (Trophy Wife), Rebekka Johnson (We Don't Hate it Here), Singer/Songwriter Kate Nash, Sunita Mani (Mr Robot), Kia Stevens (TNA's Awesome Kong and WWE's Kharma), newcomer Britt Baron, and Jackie Tohn (Sisters, Postal).

The show will be set around Alison Brie's character Ruth, who's an out-of-work actress and becomes a wrestler to in an attempt to get famous.

Ever since Darren Aronofsky's ‘The Wrestler’ became successful, rumours started flowing around the development of several wrestling-themed shows. WWE Superstar Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is currently developing a wrestling-themed show in collaboration with Will Ferrell's production company.

Norman Miller also had one wrestling-related show in development, with former WCW Superstar Diamond Dallas Page rumoured to be roped in for it. Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan also produced a reality show based on the behind-the-scenes operation of his Chicago-based wrestling promotion.
