Randy Orton has been a big part of Cody Rhodes' early career in WWE. When the American Nightmare first started in the company, he formed a successful faction along with Orton and Ted DiBiase Jr. called Legacy. As a result, Cody was mentored by Orton at a young age.
When Cody finally won the Undisputed WWE Championship from Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40, Orton was in the ring to celebrate with him. Cody and The Viper reunited again in recent weeks in their fight against the Bloodline.

Tonight on SmackDown, Randy Orton had a sitdown with Cody Rhodes backstage. The Viper told Cody that if he needed his help tonight against the Bloodline, he would be there for him. He also informed Cody that he would have his back against anyone who came after his title, which came as a bit of a surprise since many believed that Orton would turn on Cody, given his track record.
Orton is called The Viper for a reason. It will be interesting to see if Cody will be able to blindly trust his old mentor's words, given his history.
