WWE News: WWE announces a Women's Tournament coming to the WWE Network this summer

The Women’s Tournament was announced during the “WWE Reimagined” presentation

What’s the story?

WWE have announced a new tournament for their women’s roster slated for this summer. Triple H took to Twitter to share the announcement of the tournament. He pointed out that 32 competitors from 17 countries would be participating in it.

In case you didn’t know...

WWE would be looking to replicate the success of the Cruiserweight Championship with the Women’s tournament. The Cruiserweight Classic last year was one of the most successful ventures by the WWE.

The tournament saw a legion of international sports entertainers participate for a chance to win the Cruiserweight title. The 10-week long tournament culminated with TJ Perkins winning the championship in the finals against Gran Metalik.

The heart of the matter

The tournament had been in the works for a long time and was finally confirmed.

This announcement came as a part of “WWE Reimagined,” a presentation held at a business partner summit in Orlando, FL. The 32 women from 17 nationalities will represent the global outlook of the company.

The identities of the 32 women have not been revealed.

There is a possibility that some members of the NXT roster may be a part of the tournament. This will be along similar lines as the Cruiserweight Classic where the likes of Rich Swann, Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa had competed in the tournament despite holding NXT contracts.

What’s next?

It would be a tough act for the women to follow in the footsteps of the Cruiserweights. However, the women in the WWE have shown that they can compete in the ring and put up great matches between the ropes.

The classic tournament will feature on the WWE Network. This is the first time in the long history of the WWE that a tournament exclusively for females will feature on WWE TV.

Author's Take

WWE has taken women’s wrestling in a whole new trajectory over the past couple of years, and this tournament is yet another step in the right direction.

The Women’s evolution has taken over the company so much so that all the prominent members of the female roster such as Bayley, Sasha, Charlotte, Becky, Alexa and Naomi will be featured in championship matches at WrestleMania 33.
