WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle is widely viewed as one of the greatest amateur and professional wrestlers of all time. Legendary wrestling reporter Bill Apter believes Chad Gable has the potential to be the next version of Angle, but he is unsure about the RAW star's latest character change.

Gable unsuccessfully challenged Sami Zayn for the Intercontinental Championship on the April 15 episode of RAW. Following the match, the 2012 Olympian attacked Zayn in his opponent's hometown of Montreal.

Apter appeared on the latest episode of Sportskeeda's The Wrestling Time Machine alongside host Mac Davis and WWE Hall of Famer Teddy Long. Regarding Gable's heel turn, he highlighted the positives before questioning whether the Alpha Academy member should have remained a babyface.

"Gable was a heel before, obviously, but he went completely crazy in Sami Zayn's hometown, so to get heat from that audience, even the home audience watching it, not in Canada, is like, 'Oh my God, they're doing this to Sami,'" Apter said. "It was a good move. I kinda liked Chad Gable more of the face, of the babyface, because to me he was the next coming of Kurt Angle," said Apter. [3:08 – 3:36]

Gable represented the United States in amateur wrestling in the 2012 Olympic Games. In 1996, Angle won gold for his country in the same sport before becoming a pro wrestler with WWE in 1998.

How Chad Gable could get WWE fans to boo him

Over the last year, Chad Gable has established himself as one of the most consistent and versatile superstars in WWE.

Mac Davis agreed with Bill Apter that the 38-year-old performs better as a good guy. He also suggested a few ways in which RAW's newest heel could elicit more negative crowd reactions.

"I'm curious to see how this heel persona works against Sami, but I agree, I like him more as a face because he's always that underdog kind of guy. You just have to like him because of his size and everything, you're pulling for him, so for him to be a heel, hopefully he's gonna bring out a lot of nasty traits and start cheating quite a bit to make that entire thing happen," Davis said. The episode also featured a conversation about a premium live event match that Triple H could realistically book later this year.
