The greatest rivalry of the modern era will return very shortly
The greatest rivalry of the modern era will return very shortly

What's the story?

At NJPW's Dontaku show, we saw a plethora of good matches. Perhaps none so great as the match between Hiroshi Tanahashi and Kazuchika Okada for the prestigious IWGP Championship.

After a closely-fought contest, Okada picked up the win with the Rainmaker. He then called forth his greatest rival, Kenny Omega, for a rematch with a very special stipulation.

In case you didn't know...

Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada have met in three encounters in the past. In the first, Okada picked up the win and retained his IWGP Championship. In the second, the two men went to a time limit draw. In the third, Omega emerged as the eventual winner.

All of these matches have been rated 6 stars or above by Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer. Looks like we will be seeing yet another chapter in this iconic rivalry. We simply cannot wait for what's coming our way!

The heart of the matter

At the conclusion of his match with Tanahashi, Okada called Omega out for a rematch to settle the fact that there was no clear winner in their rivalry. This time, they stipulated that there would be no time limit. Moreover, it would be a 2-out-of-3 falls match, unlike the matches of the past!

At Dominion in Osaka, these two men will meet again in a match that will undoubtedly be recognized as a classic down the line. Considering how high the expectations are, we're certain that this match will deliver!

What's next?

On June 9th, Okada will defend the IWGP Championship at Dominion against Kenny Omega. Will Omega finally be crowned as the IWGP Champion? We don't have to wait long to find out.

Author's take

I can't wait for the Omega vs. Okada match. As a fan and a journalist, I live for moments like these!

Dave Meltzer may have to create a new scale to rate this contest.
