Opinion: Undertaker vs Sting could happen in AEW

I know, it seems crazy - but is anything REALLY off-limits in wrestling anymore?

The wrestling world was shocked again tonight with the announcement that The Undertaker, a staple of WWE, would be appearing at Starrcast II.

The WWE legend, who has rarely appeared outside of the company never mind for another wrestling company, will be appearing at Starrcast II during All Elite Wrestling's Double or Nothing Weekend, per a report from Sports Illustrated.

Undertaker is only booked for Starrcast, but he is booked for the same day as Double or Nothing takes place. Several other wrestlers, both AEW and not, are scheduled to appear at the event too - most notably, Sting!

While Sting has been out of action since Night of Champions 2015, when he suffered an unfortunate injury in a match with Seth Rollins to cut short his monumental WWE run, The Icon has expressed interest at having one more match - as long as it's with Undertaker. Sting recently opened up about the plans he had for the match, too.

I think that if I could have made it through that last match with Seth, I was really going to push hard to see if I could get that WrestleMania [program] with Taker. I had so many ideas that developed over a couple of decades based on his character and my character and some of the ideas I had in my head.
Could it happen?
Could it happen?

Sting has previously said that he is definitely done with competing in the ring, but teased that he and Undertaker could still put on a classic immediately. In fact, at Wales Comic Con in 2017, the Icon said.

I have never said ‘one more match’ ever. I’d like to have one more match, I’d like to have that Undertaker match.

Would Taker want the match? You'd have to think so. After a spell where it looked like he may be nearing the end, a great showing at WWE's Super Show-Down followed by a performance that looked every bit like Taker in his prime at Crown Jewel would point to at least one more match being left in the tank of the legend.

One interesting point is that The Deadman would most likely have to change his name - maybe just to 'Taker' as WWE almost definitely own the rights to Undertaker, but that would probably be the least of everyone's worries if this became a possibility.

It was always thought that this match would have to happen at some point, but it's turned into more of the one that got away in recent years. If AEW pulled off this one, it would be, without doubt, the biggest coup of all time - and would be a main event to rival anything else anywhere in the world!

Could we get an earth-shattering staredown at Starrcast II or even Double or Nothing? We can only hope.
