What's the story?

Since his WWE departure, Austin Aries has kept a low profile, but has recently started taking independent wrestling dates again. At these shows, he has revealed a new gimmick - 'The Truth' for which Aries says exactly what's on his mind, and that's exactly what he did during the recent World Series Wrestling International Assault Show in Brisbane, Australia.

In case you didn't know...

World Series Wrestling is an Australian based promotion with the recent International Assault 2K17 show taking place on the 26th November being an incredibly stacked show. Austin Aries was joined by Richochet, Tessa Blanchard, The Headbangers, X-Pac, Zack Sabre Jr. and Joey Ryan.

The heart of the matter

After cutting a promo about what an honour it was to wrestle with X-Pac, Aries suddenly turned, criticised the state of the wrestling ring and then gestured towards his eye before walking out, leaving X-Pac to try to save the mood.

"I'm known for being kind've an asshole and speaking the truth. You've got a lot of talented of men and women in the back who bust their asses on this stage. This stage is called a wrestling ring and quite honestly this wrestling ring is a f****** disgrace."

Fan reports from the show suggest that the ring was in a pretty bad state, with audience members talking about the mat being duct taped together, the ring dangerously lurching about and other performers, such as Zack Sabre Jr. describing it as a "nightmare".

There are also reports that Aries suffered a legit eye injury, which was why he gestured to his eye, seemingly blaming the poor condition of the ring for his injury, hence his anger towards it.

What's next?

It's unclear whether or not Aries was genuinely angry at the ring in Brisbane or if he was just using it as an excuse to live up to his new 'The Truth' gimmick.

Either way his promos are garnering attention, but maybe for the wrong reasons, just like his first promo since returning to action post-WWE.

Author's take

Whether it's for good or bad reasons, you can't argue that making headlines is exactly what an independent wrestler wants to do. That being said, I can't help but wonder if this is the kind of name Aries wants to be making for himself in the latter stages of his in-ring career.
