What’s the story?

Ring of Honor hosted their 12th Supercard of Honor pay-per-view earlier today at the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana and as noted, the promotion lined-up an amazing match card. Overall, it featured superstars from both the ROH and New Japan Pro Wrestling roster and as well as from Japan-based women’s promotion World Wonder Ring Stardom.

In case you didn’t know…

ROH: Supercard of Honor usually takes place in the same weekend as WWE’s flagship event that is the WrestleMania pay-per-view.

ROH’s WrestleMania weekend shows have been an annual tradition since 2006 and the show is normally hosted in the same city or in nearby cities as WrestleMania. However, in 2010 and 2011 the Supercard of Honor event did not take place until the show eventually made its return in 2013.

The heart of the matter

The main focus on this year’s ROH: Supercard of Honor event was the internal issues of the Bullet Club, as “The Best Bout Machine” Kenny Omega squared-off against “The American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes in a one-on-one grudge match.

Elsewhere on the card, the second main-event of the show featured Dalton Castle defending his ROH World Title against “The Villain” Marty Scurll, who got a shot at the ROH World Title for the very first time in his career.

On the other hand, the undercard featured some of the best wrestlers from ROH, NJPW, and Stardom, including the likes of The Young Bucks, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kota Ibushi, and even Mayu Iwatani.

Below are the results for Supercard of Honor XII:

#1 - Chuck Taylor vs Jonathan Gresham

The newest member of CHAOS got the best out of hot upstart Jonathan Gresham and after the match, Chuckie T also appeared to be on good terms with his best friends Trent Beretta.

Result: Chuck Taylor def. Jonathan Gresham

#2 - Punishment Martinez vs Tomohiro Ishii

Punishment Martinez, who is another one of the fastest rising superstars in ROH today, earned himself a massive win over new RevPro UK: British Heavyweight Champion, “The Stone Pitbull” Tomohiro Ishii.

Result: Punishment Martinez def. Tomohiro Ishii

#3 - Kota Ibushi vs Hangman Page

This bout was certainly an underrated match and Ibushi and Hangman proved why they’re among the very best in the pro wrestling industry today. After a lot of back-and-forth high flying and fast paced action between the two men, Ibushi would go on to put away Page after a Kamigoye Knee.

Result: Kota Ibushi def. Hangman Page

#4 - Sumie Sakai vs Kelly Klein (Women of Honor Championship match)

After defeating Tenille Dashwood earlier on in the night, veteran Sumie Sakai would go on to become the inaugural Women of Honor Champion after hitting a DDT on her opponent Kelly Klein.

Result: Sumie Sakai def. Kelly Klein

#5 - SoCal Uncensored (c) vs The Young Bucks and Flip Gordon (ROH Six-Man Tag Team Championship Ladder Match)

As expected, this match certainly did not fail to live up to its expectations as we had the chance of witnessing some of the craziest spots of the evening, courtesy of Matt and Nick Jackson - The Young Bucks. Flip Gordon was also equally amazing as well and definitely had great chemistry with The Bucks.

Christopher Daniels eventually climbed up the ladder and retrieved the belts as SoCal Uncensored retained the gold; however, following the match, The Kingdom ran in and stole the belts from the champions.

Result: SoCal Uncensored def. The Young Bucks and Flip Gordon

#6 - The Briscoes (c) vs Jay Lethal and Hiroshi Tanahashi (ROH World Tag Team Championship)

The Briscoes, who are currently in their ninth-reign as ROH Tag Champions, retained their championship belts against a dream team of “The Ace” Hiroshi Tanahashi and former ROH World Champion Jay Lethal, who was eventually pinned in the match after Mark and Jay connected with the Doomsday Device.

#7 - Kenny King (c) vs Silas Young (ROH TV Championship Last Man Standing Match)

After having previously successfully retained the belt against Silas Young in the past, Kenny King failed to keep hold of the title on this occasion as Young became a two-time ROH TV Champion. After the match, Austin Aries ran in to make the save for Kenny King as he was on the receiving end of a beatdown from Beer City Bruiser and Silas Young.

Result: Silas Young def. Kenny King

#8 - Cheeseburger and Bully Ray vs The Dawgs

This match was previously unscheduled and ended in a no-contest after Bully Ray chokeslammed Cheeseburger and cut a promo on him, Will Ospreay, Flip Gordon, and Ricochet claiming that they have ruined the wrestling business.

Result: The Dawgs def. Cheeseburger and Bully Ray

#9 - Cody Rhodes vs Kenny Omega

In the closing stages of this match, the referee along with both the competitors were down as the Young Bucks ran down towards the ring and after being confused for a moment, both Matt and Nick decided to superkick Cody, but hit Omega instead. Cody then followed it up with a Cross Rhodes to win the match.

Result: Cody def. Kenny Omega

#10 - Dalton Castle (c) vs Marty Scurll (ROH World Championship)

In the second main event of the evening, Dalton Castle retained the ROH World Title after hitting the Bangarang on “The Villain” whom, despite receiving an assist from NWA World Champion Nick Aldis, failed to seize the opportunity and the capture his first ever ROH World Title.

What’s next?

Following the conclusion of Supercard of Honor, ROH will now look forward to the ROH/NJPW co-produced War of the Worlds pay-per-view on the 12 May, 2018 in Toronto, Ontario.

Author’s take

ROH: Supercard of Honor, in my opinion, was a solid but average pay-per-view and certainly could have been a lot better.
