Royal Rumble 2019: Why WWE has to do a repeat of No Way Out 2004 in the Universal Championship match

Balor vs Lesnar is the ultimate David vs Goliath fight
Balor vs Lesnar is the ultimate David vs Goliath fight

This past week on Monday Night RAW, Finn Balor defeated John Cena, Baron Corbin, and Drew McIntyre to become the new #1 contender for the Universal Championship. Balor is now on a collision course with the reigning Universal Champion, Brock Lesnar, in two weeks at the Royal Rumble.

Balor vs Lesnar is a match fans have been wanting to see for quite some time now. In fact, it was heavily reported that Balor would be facing off against Lesnar for the Universal Championship during last year's Royal Rumble, but that didn't ultimately happen.

As per reports, Vince McMahon didn't think Balor was over enough, and decided to scrap the match in favor of a triple threat involving Kane and Braun Strowman.

Balor vs Lesnar is one of the biggest David vs Goliath matches in WWE history. From a pure sports standpoint, there seems to be no plausible way for Balor to defeat the Beast Incarnate.

The huge size difference is another issue WWE has to take into consideration before putting this match on paper. But Lesnar has had some of his best matches against guys who are smaller in size, as his matches against AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan are a prime example of that.

And while Lesnar is the overwhelming favorite to walk out of Chase Field with the Universal Championship, stranger things have happened in the WWE. The last time Lesnar was involved in such a high stakes match which resembled a David vs Goliath fight, was when he defended the WWE Championship against 'Latino Heat' Eddie Guerrero at No Way Out 2004.

Guerrero defeated Lesnar, thanks to an assist from Goldberg, winning the WWE Championship in a moment which is forever etched in the minds of WWE fans. There is no reason why WWE wouldn't do a repeat come Royal Rumble, with arguably the hottest babyface in the company right now in Finn Balor.

Lesnar's contract situation is still up in the air, and there have been a few conflicting reports regarding the Beast Incarnate's current WWE contract. What we know for sure is that Lesnar has signed with the UFC, as has been confirmed by UFC President, Dana White.

While Lesnar's drawing power cannot be debatable, having him hold the top prize in the company has angered a large portion of the WWE fandom.

No one is excepting Balor to pin Lesnar clean, so the WWE could add a screwy finish by having someone like Braun Strowman, or the Club (Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson, and AJ Styles), or even a returning Dave Batista attack Lesnar during the match, allowing Balor to capitalize and pin Lesnar to win the title he never lost.

This way, Lesnar will be protected even in defeat, and the WWE Universe will get a full-time member of the red brand as the Universal Champion, which could then set up a Universal Championship rematch between Seth Rollins and Finn Balor at WrestleMania 35.
