WWE Rumors: WWE cancelled a match hours before WrestleMania 33

TJ Perkins won the inaugural Cruiserweight belt in 2016

What’s the story?

As per veteran pro-wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer, the WWE cancelled a Cruiserweight matchup that was scheduled to take place at WrestleMania 33.

In a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer revealed that the decision to make the match was impromptu and the company had roped in 6 Superstars from its roster for the same.

In case you didn’t know...

The WWE Cruiserweight division was reinstated in September of last year after its initial run from 1991-2007.

The heart of the matter:

In spite of the fact that WrestleMania was a 7-hour long show, the 6-man Cruiserweight showdown was nixed owing to lack of air-time.

It’s essential to note that WWE had not advertised the aforementioned matchup beforehand and the bout was both made and scrapped on WrestleMania night itself. Nevertheless, WrestleMania 33 featured a Cruiserweight Championship match in the pre-show which saw Neville successfully defend his title against Austin Aries.

What’s next?

The Cruiserweight division is currently promoted by WWE’s RAW brand with the WWE’s weekly show 205 Live dedicated exclusively to the Cruiserweight division.

Author’s take:

Now I know that many of you hardcore fans out there may bring up the point of WWE devoting airtime to Pitbull and co. taking center-stage to perform at Mania, but just hear me out.

The Cruiserweight division gets more than its share of attention of Monday Night RAW and has a whole show exclusively featuring Cruiserweight performers in 205 Live. Rest assured folks, the high-flying acrobats are here to stay!
