Before making all necessary endorsements in mid-2016, Styles was cherishing life as the leader of the Bullet Club in New Japan Pro Wrestling. Large and in charge as IWGP Heavyweight Champion and having rankling fights with everybody from Kazuchika Okada to Shinsuke Nakamura, AJ had discovered his calling.
Possibly his decision to wrestle for WWE has more to do with age and the fact that he just wanted latter part of his years in the biggest wrestling promotion of the world. The same reason Rey Mysterio is coming back.
