The biggest winners and losers of WWE Crown Jewel 2019

Better late than never.
Better late than never.

WWE's latest controversial Saudi Arabian show is over, with Crown Jewel having been held last night. To the company's credit, 2019's edition of Crown Jewel was much better than the previous year's show. In fact, it was probably the best of the four Saudi shows to date, though that admittedly isn't a high bar to clear.

This is the only one so far that hasn't been almost universally panned and that gives you a sense of the competition that the other three shows serve up.

Any progress is welcome, of course. There will be more of these shows.

There were some big matches on this card, and now that there's been some time to digest the results, let's go over who got the most and least out of WWE's Halloween show.

Who were the biggest winners and losers of Crown Jewel 2019?

Winner: Humberto Carrillo

Humberto Carrillo had a good night in Saudi Arabia, first winning the battle royal and then having a competitive match with AJ Styles for the United States Championship.

He once again fell short, but his night was a testament to his current standing backstage. WWE officials think highly enough of him to make sure that he's getting featured in these big spots. That is a huge step up in just a few weeks from being an extra on WWE's most underexposed brand, 205 Live.

Carrillo's ceiling remains to be seen. As I mentioned before, there is a risk that he'll become the next Andrade - constantly having good showings with top names but never actually being able to defeat them - a jobber to the stars.

Perhaps Survivor Series will reveal more about Carrillo's true standing in the company. First let's see if he gets on the card. Either way, he's had an incredible couple of weeks.

Loser: Cain Velasquez

Hopefully, this was Cain Velasquez's one and only match in WWE, because there's little coming back from this. The man who menaced Brock Lesnar, who was promoted as having his number, tapped out in about two minutes, not even bothering to fight and get to the ropes.

This was as close to a burial as it gets, and it really makes you wonder why WWE ended Kofi Kingston's title reign so anticlimactically if this was what they were going to do with the Brock vs. Cain fight that they wanted.

There are no winners here, truly. Everyone on SmackDown looks bad as a result of this. The entire food chain was upended for no real reason.

Loser: Braun Strowman

Once again, WWE just can't help itself by having any D list celebrity go over its own talent. For Braun Strowman, it's the latest in a long string of high profile losses. The company will let him menace everyone on the weekly shows, but will never let him get a truly big victory on pay per view. That's been the pattern for two years now and yesterday's show was no exception.

Braun Strowman lost by countout, true, after a taking a hard hit. He came back to powerslam Tyson Fury in the aftermath. However, we're left with the impression that, once again, Strowman chokes on the biggest stages.

And who will really reap the benefit?

Loser: Cesaro

Mansoor was obviously going to win this match in front of his home crowd. WWE's trope of having its wrestlers lose in their hometowns doesn't apply when Saudi enters the equation.

That the company picked Cesaro to do the job to a rookie like Mansoor that isn't even on the main roster yet shows his standing in the company.

One of the most underutilized talents, it sadly doesn't even look like Cesaro will be in midcard title contention anytime soon. Much like Andrade, he's only there to make others the company is high on look good in competitive matches.

Winner: Bray Wyatt

Better late than never. Bray Wyatt's value still isn't as high as it was before Hell in a Cell, but this was a much needed step in the right direction, both for him and RAW. Credit to WWE for fooling us all with the draft, thinking he would be packed off to SmackDown. How he gets back to RAW will be the big story though.

Moreover, with WrestleMania starting to come out of the fog, who will challenge him? Either way, Bray Wyatt at the helm of RAW will make for a much more exciting program as WWE begins the process of gearing up for its biggest event.
