The biggest winners and losers of last night's SmackDown (September 25)

Samoe Joe goes to the Styles home.
He went there.

Completely opposite of Raw, SmackDown fired an all cylinders, hitting every note from top to bottom. Everything and everyone felt important, even the lower tiered programs, and the blue brand is getting better at using most of its stacked roster in the two hours available to it.

SmackDown has been night and day compared to Raw and it truly forces this fan to wonder how the two shows can be so far apart from one another in quality - and this isn't even the old NXT vs. main roster comparison!

With two hours packed full of action, who got the most and least out of last night's good showing?

Winners: Everyone in this segment

This feud badly needed a kick in the rear after the involvement of their wives cooled it considerably. Last night gave it to us. In the best promo of the feud so far, Miz hammered Bryan, telling him that he didn't have what it takes to defeat him because he wasn't willing to do anything in order to secure victory.

The only way he could emerge victorious, Miz said, was to abandon his moral compass and thus the support of his fans. Daniel Bryan couldn't beat Miz as the Daniel Bryan everyone loved, but as another man.

The match that followed with R-Truth was pedestrian, but the build to Super Showdown in Australia got a lot hotter as a result of this segment. It even did a good job of highlighting R-Truth, whose comedic abilities added a little relief to the seriousness of the situation.

Even Carmella, although she couldn't get over on her own, was better in this segment than she ever was during her run as women's champion.

This was a nice use of everyone on the roster according to their strengths. Raw's writers should watch this.

Losers: The New Day and The Bar

This match was fine, but in comparison to the rest of the night, it felt pedestrian and on autopilot as a feud-builder. The likely outcome here is that the New Day will accumulate losses en route to retaining in Australia. With the history that these two teams have, there's a much better way to tell a story between them aside from telegraphing the New Day's victory at Super Showdown while making the tag team champions look weak in the build.

As good as it always is to see The Bar on TV, this fell flat in comparison to most of the programming.

Winner: Aiden English

Not many people were happy that Rusev Day broke up, this writer included, but last night's segment was an excellent way to kick off the feud. Aiden English hit a home run with his attempt to introduce seeds of dissension between Rusev and Lana, rightly pointing out that Lana's involvement with the tandem was the beginning of the problems with Rusev Day.

But he went further, talking about a certain "night in Milwaukee" which he has video evidence of.

That was certainly a great way to keep us interested.

Winner/Loser: Asuka

The slow rebuilding of Asuka continues, albeit with nothing much to write home about this week. The match, aside from a cool finisher between Asuka and Naomi, was sloppy. Naomi was out of place as the hot tag partner of the two while Asuka sold for most of the match. Those roles should be reversed.

It's hard to make note of this except to say that it appears women's tag team titles are on the way.

Winner: Tye Dillinger

That isn't something I'm used to saying, but it appears that Dillinger might be getting some focus, at least for a while. Sure, he's only being set up to be Randy Orton's next victim, but he's getting on TV, and that's a win by his standards.

Shinsuke Nakamura continues to be an afterthought as United States Champion.

Winner: Becky Lynch

Becky Lynch knocked it out of the park all night long and it was great to see. Imposing herself on Lana during the turmoil with Rusev was a great way to establish her as the tyrant of the division. Most fans still cheer Becky as a babyface, but she's doing a great job as a heel regardless.

Part of me thinks this feud has been too one-sided since Hell in a Cell and as a result, Charlotte will win the title back at Evolution, but we'll have to see how the next few weeks go.

Winner: Samoa Joe

He actually went there.

Samoa Joe paid a visit to the Styles home.

This was a great segment and ended the show on a cliffhanger. For the first time in a while, this writer was disappointed a show was over and can't wait to see what happens next.

Joe continues to shine every time he's given the chance and it's absurd that he hasn't been awarded the WWE Championship yet.
