The women’s division of WWE has undergone a revolution and things are not the same as they were before. The female wrestlers are no longer called “divas” as the WWE now recognizes them as WWE Superstars. Vince McMahon’s company has done away with the butterfly title and established a new championship known as the “Women’s championship”. The company has also announced an all woman’s PPV for the month of October titled “WWE Evolution”.
Most of the new superstars now are enthralling the WWE Universe with their Instagram handles and model-like posts. Many young superstars like Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks, Alexa Bliss have a huge fan following on social media. While the male superstars have always been more popular among the wrestling fans but the quality of matches put on by the women has improved and helped in taking the women's division to the next level.
Here’s a countdown of the 10 women in the company.
#10 Bayley
Bayley was one of the most “over” female superstars in the NXT but somehow due to poor booking decisions, she is now languishing at the bottom of the women’s division. A former RAW Women’s Champion in her own right, Bayley is currently involved in an angle with Sasha Banks which might lead to the announcement of Women’s Tag Titles.
Bayley has been seriously under-used in 2018 as she has never been a part of a Championship feud. Since the arrival of Ronda Rousey, the WWE Creative have reduced Bayley to a superstar who wrestles the filler matches on TV.
The entrance and charisma of the Huggable One is enough to bring a dead crowd alive. The WWE Universe hopes to see better booking decisions for Bayley sooner rather than later.
#9 Carmella
Former 2-time MITB winner and SmackDown Women’s champion, Carmella has been quite a success story on the main roster. During her time in NXT, WWE used her as a valet to Enzo and Big Cass. Later, she found James Ellsworth lovable, and the pair ruled SmackDown Live! for most of 2017. After her stint with the Women’s championship ended, the WWE Creative team paired her with R Truth.
Mella has improved leaps and bounds as compared to her NXT run and is one of the top female superstars on the blue brand.
#8 Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville
Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville debuted as a part of Paige’s Absolution faction. Due to the sudden retirement of Paige, the faction came to an abrupt end. During the 2018 Superstar Shake-up, the Creative team transferred the two women to the SmackDown brand, which led to a new phase in their careers.
These two talented superstars are one force to reckon with on Tuesday nights and are worthy contenders to win the rumored Women’s Tag Titles.
#7 The IIconics
The Iconic duo of the Australian superstar Peyton Royce and Billie Kay is currently dominating the SmackDown women's division. The IIconics debuted on the main roster on the SmackDown episode after WrestleMania 34. They laid out the then champion Charlotte Flair unconscious just for Carmella to cash-in her MITB.
The IIconics will be seen in action next at the WWE Super ShowDown slated to take place on their home turf of Australia. Naomi and Asuka will their opponents in what is set to be a landmark event Down Under.
#6 Sasha Banks
Sasha Banks was the face of the RAW women’s division, when she and Charlotte Flair had one of the most memorable rivalries in recent history. Sasha has always been a part of WWE’s “first-time” women’s matches. The list comprises an Ironman match, Hell in a Cell match, Royal Rumble match and even the Elimination Chamber match.
Mickie James replaced the Boss in the WWE MMC-II due to injury concerns. WWE Universe hopes that the former Women’s champion regains fitness and takes part in the first ever all Women’s PPV “Evolution”.
#5 Lana
The Bulgarian Brute’s wife, Lana has never been at the helm of a women’s division. She started her career managing Rusev. Since 2017, Lana has focussed on her wrestling skills. She once competed for the SmackDown women’s championship. She would also pick up her first televised victory teaming up Rusev at WWE MMC. Lana is a fan-favorite female superstar with chants of “Lana is the best, Lana no.1!”, “Lana DAY” echoing through the arenas wherever the Ravishing Russian is present.
Lana has been less of a wrestler and more of a cheerleader/manager on WWE TV. She is a part of a storyline which has grabbed the attention of WWE Universe with Aiden English promising to reveal some shocking details about Lana & a night in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
#4 Charlotte Flair
The reason I’ve ranked the Nature Girl at number 4 is because of her lackluster run as a face. Charlotte was the best heel in the entire women’s division when she was on RAW. After capturing the women’s title for the 7th time at SummerSlam 2018, her best friend Becky Lynch betrayed her in what ignited an intense rivalry between the two.
Barring this rivalry, Charlotte was a part of a meaningless feud with Asuka, where both were faces and this only led to the end of the Japanese superstar’s unbeaten streak. Post WrestleMania 34, she lost a feud to Carmella and then took time off TV before returning few weeks before Summer Slam.
#3 Ronda Rousey
After a surprise debut at WWE Royal Rumble, Ronda signed a contract with the RAW brand at WWE Fastlane. However, things did not work out well as the brawl that broke out at the contract signing led to a mixed tag team match at the grandest stage. Rousey impressed one and all by her in-ring performance as she picked up her first victory in WWE.
The reigning RAW Women’s champion would further have feuds against Nia Jax and Alexa Bliss to capture the gold at the biggest party of Summer. She is now scheduled to pair up with the Bella Twins to take on the Riott Squad at WWE Super ShowDown.
#2 Becky Lynch
The Irish Lasskicker, Becky Lynch is the reigning Women’s champion on the blue brand. Becky unexpectedly turned heel on her best friend Charlotte Flair at Summer Slam and successfully captured the Women’s championship at Hell in A Cell.
The WWE Universe needs to appreciate the way the writers have scripted this heel turn. Heel Becky Lynch is one of the hottest acts on WWE TV right now. Becky’s next challenge is at WWE Super ShowDown where she defends her championship against Charlotte Flair.
#1 Alexa Bliss
The Goddess of WWE, ever since her debut on the main roster post the brand split, has seldom been out of the title picture. She has been the breakout star from NXT, possessing incredible mic skills and fantastic in-ring moves. But what adds more to her popularity is her . her acting skills, ability to play with the crowd and interactions with fellow male superstars on TV.
The Ohio-native has been the Women’s division MVP since her debut. The Goddess has exceeded the expectations of the WWE Universe within a short period and has been at the helm of the division for most of her main roster run.
Alexa Bliss is destined for grand success in the future given the way the WWE Creative have booked her so far. With a dream match against Trish Stratus slated for WWE: Evolution, Bliss has proved that age & size do not matter to achieve success in any field of life.
