Top 5 candidates to dethrone Shayna Baszler as NXT Women's Champion

Aside Asuka, Shayna Baszler is the most dominant NXT Women's Champion in history, and with Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke by her side, it's hard to see her reign coming to an end anytime soon.

Ever since the dominant reign of Asuka, the women's division hasn't really recovered, and while they've had some great performers and amazing matches, it's never been as deep as it once was.

That's changing now, as there are plenty of women, some not on this list who are ready to step up and make the NXT's Women's division better than it's ever been, but there's only a handful with the true potential to dethrone The Queen of Spades.

So that's what we're looking at today, 5 women currently signed to NXT with the potential to take the NXT Women's Championship from Shayna Baszler.

#5 Chelsea Green

Chelsea Green

Admittedly, Chelsea Green isn't the most physically intimidating performer on this list, but she's a fantastic character worker, and the Hot Mess Express will surprise a lot of people when she debuts in NXT.

Green came to prominence in a storyline involving Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella, after appearing on WWE's Tough Enough, but she put together a great resume in Impact, and she's become a very well rounded performer.

She's currently competing on the NXT live show loop and putting in great performances, so it's only a matter of time until she makes her mark on NXT proper.

If she were to dethrone Baszler, it would be at least 10-12 months down the track, so it's highly unlikely, but if the WWE can push her similarly to the way they pushed Nikki Cross a year ago, it would be a big surprise and an interesting twist for NXT.

Ultimately, we doubt this happens, but given how talented and unique Green is, it's something worth considering.

#4 Bianca Belair

A lot of people were surprised when the WWE decided to have Bianca Belair challenge for the Women's Title at NXT Takeover Phoenix, and no one gave her a chance, but to her credit, Belair put in a hell of a performance.

She's still green in the wrestling business, but it's clear that she has the charisma, the character and the in-ring work to be a future RAW or SmackDown Live Women's Champion.

After being dispatched by the Queen of Spades, it's unlikely we see The EST get another shot anytime soon, but if the WWE can build her up over the next year, it will be a great redemption story.

Ultimately, this one is unlikely too, because she has way too much potential to be held down in NXT for much longer, but given her amazing performance in Phoenix, it would make sense if WWE wanted to go back to this story once more.

#3 Mia Yim

In 2016, with the WWE Cruiserweight Classic, Cedric Alexander won over the Full Sail Crowd, drawing chants of "Please sign Cedric", and in the Mae Young Classic 2, it was Mia Yim to receive that treatment.

Yim put on an incredible run, showing off just how much she has improved on the independent scene over the past few years, but ultimately fell short to tournament winner Toni Storm, however making a huge name for herself.

Since joining NXT following that great run, Yim has been doing well but hasn't yet been pushed into a proper story, and after Bianca Belair had a run at NXT Takeover Phoenix, it's easy to see them now getting behind Yim.

The Blasian Baddie can do it all inside the squared circle, and is tough as nails, so she's the perfect opponent for Baszler, and would get a tremendous pop if the company can build her properly.

#2 Rhea Ripley

Rhea Ripley
Rhea Ripley

Rhea Ripley debuted in the first ever Mae Young Classic and followed it up a year later with another tremendous performance, and her improvement in this time can't be understated.

Going from a fresh-faced youngster looking to have fun to The Nightmare we see today, Ripley has improved in leaps and bounds, and given that she's still in her early 20s, the sky is the limit for her.

Ripley has gone on to win the NXT UK Women's Championship, but with Toni Storm being the future of that division, Ripley should be moving on to conquer NXT proper. Rhea still has room for improvement in the work-rate department, but she sticks to her character perfectly and is one of the few women in NXT who can stand up to Shayna physically.

If Baszler is to stay down in NXT beyond SummerSlam, this is a very big possibility, as the WWE clearly has big plans for the young Aussie, and it wouldn't surprise anyone to see her take out The Queen of Spades.

#1 Io Shirai

Io Shirai
Io Shirai

After Shayna Baszler defeated Io Shirai's best friend, Kairi Sane, to win and then defend the NXT Women's Championship, she immediately became the favorite to dethrone the dominant Baszler.

The Genius of the Sky is one of the most innovative, hard-hitting wrestlers the world has seen, regardless of gender, and WWE is clearly building her up to be a force.

After Asuka's dominant reign at the top of NXT, the WWE can't push Shirai in the same way, but she's every bit as good as The Empress of Tomorrow, and that's exactly what's needed to dethrone Shayna.

NXT Takeover over WrestleMania weekend is NXT's biggest show of the year, and if WWE wants to bring Shayna to the main roster, it makes sense for Shirai to challenge for the belt, but they can build her up even more.

Io is yet to have the barnburner singles match in NXT, but she's capable of putting on 5-star classics, and if the company builds Baszler vs Shirai correctly, it could be a Match of The Year contender.
