What’s the story?
Speaking to Chris Van Vliet from WSVN-TV, Christopher Daniels spoke of his chances of ever signing with WWE. Daniels believes that if it was ever going to happen, it would have been when he was much younger.
The Background
Despite spending some time with WWE in the late 90s to early 2000s under a developmental contract, Daniels was never signed as a full-time talent with the company (though he was used as a jobber) and instead ended up leaving and making his name on the independent wrestling scene. He has performed all over the world but is most well known for his work in TNA and Ring of Honor, where he is the current ROH World Champion.
It was recently revealed by Bruce Prichard on his podcast, ‘Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard’, that Daniels was actually considered to be revealed as the ‘Higher Power’ in the infamous Undertaker and Vince McMahon angle in 1999, when Daniels was with the company.
The heart of the matter
If this is true, it’s probably the closest Daniels ever came to making it in WWE. When asked by WSVN-TV of his hopes of signing with them, he stated that he believes that that ship has sailed and he is unlikely to ever be picked up by the company now.
“I don’t think so man. Honestly, I’m sure the WWE’s not looking for 47-year old rookies and that’s fine with me. The timing of my career worked out where when I might have been interesting to them, were times that I was under contract with TNA or Ring of Honor and that’s fine with me. I’m happy to build up Ring of Honor as best I can.”
What’s next?
‘The Fallen Angel’ is still on the top of his game and doing some great work on the independent circuit. After recently winning his first ever ROH World Championship, Daniels’ next goal is to make the belt as prestigious as it can be and take ROH as a whole to new heights.
Author’s Take
When Christopher Daniels’ in-ring career does eventually come to an end, I believe he may end up going to WWE in a coaching capacity at the performance centre. Over his 24-year career, Daniels has cemented himself as one of the best wrestlers on the planet and would certainly have plenty of knowledge and advice that he could pass on when he does hang up his boots.
Daniels has had, and is still having, an exceptional career despite never making it to WWE and he will be looked back on as one of the greatest talents of his generation by the fans that have watched him.
