Widely regarded as one of the most innovative wrestlers and controversial figures in WWE history, Melina is rumored to be very close to signing a contract with the company she left in 2011. And going by the words doing the rounds, she may have already inked the dotted line that leads to her return. The story of the women’s division has been quite different since the 37-year-old left 5 years ago. It has gone through hell and high-water and has resurrected itself with the ‘Four Horsewomen’ leading the change and Sasha Banks’ latest crowning moment being the ultimate ascent into the new era of brand extensions.
Melina has a lot of new opportunities in front of her if she makes a return. Here are 5 ways to book Melina.
1: Feud with Nia Jax
The one main thing one would expect from a former Women’s and Divas champion is putting a talent over. And for someone like Melina who is much revered in this industry and has been put over as one of the most innovative performers with an impressive arsenal of moves, she can face just about anyone. Jax is being pushed as a monster heel, squashing her way to the front of the line. And if we go by Melina’s history of matches with monster heels like Beth Phoenix, we can expect her to create something great with Jax. Going over a veteran and possible future Hall of Famer like Melina can only mean well for Jax’s future.
2: Head over to NXT
If there is anything NXT TakeOver: The End represented, it was the end of NXT being known as WWE’s developmental territory. It was the beginning of NXT being treated as a brand in itself.
For someone like Melina, who has won virtually everything the company has offered its female performers, the NXT Championship is something that still represents a new challenge. Asuka doesn’t have many challengers left except Bayley, who is herself going to the main roster sooner rather than later. She needs more challenges and even though WWE is building up Billie Kay, a veteran challenging Asuka will not do any harm. NXT’s female roster could also use her at its current threadbare state.
Melina can very well pose a major challenge to The Empress of Tomorrow.
3: Join SmackDown Live’s thin women’s division
The Women’s division of Smackdown hasn’t been gifted with what the Women’s division of Raw has - a major championship. The Women’s Championship is on Raw and there is no prize for the women of Smackdown to fight for. The show also has Becky Lynch and Natalya who are great in the ring while the rest are still learning and improving. It is the division that has fresh faces. So, for a woman who has won almost everything, Melina doesn’t need to prove anything by winning the championship she’s already won before. Smackdown is a great platform for not only putting young talent over but for also legitimizing the division with her presence.
4: Winning the WWE Women’s Championship again
The battlefield for the WWE Women’s Championship is fresh and quite exciting. Sasha Banks holds the reigns. With Charlotte, Paige, Jax and Dana Brooke- there is whole new range of talent in the division. Melina hasn’t faced any of them and all of them are very instrumental in bringing back attention to women’s wrestling and making it entertaining again. Melina facing any of them is a major move and a very significant one. She is going to be the oldest woman in the division at 37 years of age and maybe she has to prove that she’s still got it. A championship win will only be in the best interest of the division.

So, if Melina does return, it is only apt to have one of the greatest women’s wrestlers ever to face the woman who is being widely regarded as the best in her generation and a Legit Boss. Winning the WWE Women’s Championship again will mean going through the face of the new era of women’s wrestling and Banks established that last week with her stellar championship victory over Charlotte. Both wrestlers are immensely over and well versed in the language of wrestling and comfortable on the mic. Things are going to get electric. A legend posing a threat to the current regime is always an interesting storyline to fall into.
