Will WWE surprise us with a few matches and decisions this Sunday?

With Extreme Rules just around the corner, fans are excited for the star-studded event which will feature some of the greatest wrestlers in the business today.

The card for the event is studded with six championship matches which will see seven titles be defended at the event.

Extreme Rules might also provide us with the premier monster in WWE, as Braun Strowman and Bobby Lashley will go head-to-head in what could be the most physical match of the night. It could prove to be the end to their rivalry and a major push for the victor of the match in coming weeks leading to a title match at SummerSlam.

Since WWE will want to ensure that fans get talking about the event during and after the show, they will want to surprise them in every way possible and get social media buzzing.

In this article, we will look at the 4 biggest surprises that WWE could throw at us during the show which will make the event a successful and memorable one.

#4 A mid-card match steals the show

Extreme Rules has some very interesting matches set up which will unfold this Sunday. Among these are top matches which will be in Tag Team formats, such as the one for Raw’s top men’s and women’s championship and also between the unlikely teams of Shane McMahon and Drew McIntyre, and The Undertaker and Roman Reigns.

While the card is filled with the top superstars of WWE, there is one mid-card match which seems to be the most exciting one as of now.

Since being drafted to SmackDown during the 2019 WWE Superstar Shake-up in April, Aleister Black began appearing in ominous backstage promos in a dark room, awaiting a challenger. On the July 9 episode, Raw's Cesaro was revealed as the mystery challenger.

Both men are extremely talented and could surprise us with possibly the best match of the night in their first on-screen encounter for the WWE Universe.

We are expecting Black and Cesaro to become the two top wrestlers in WWE sooner than later, and this could prove to be the feud that will catapult them.

#3 Return of former Women’s Champion

Will someone have Bayley's back on Sunday?
Will someone have Bayley's back on Sunday?

Bayley and Alexa went head to head at Stomping Grounds where Bayley retained her SmackDown Women's Championship. While it seemed like a one-off match and a short feud, WWE seems to have something in store for the fans which has led them to extend the feud.

That, coupled with Bliss’ unlikely alliance with Nikki Cross, raises a few suspicions regarding where WWE is slowly taking this feud. Could it lead the return of former Women’s Champion Sasha Banks who could show up to help her friend in her handicap match against Bliss and Cross for the SmackDown Women’s Championship at Extreme Rules?

This surprise will be a welcome one as Banks has been away from WWE since losing her Women's Tag Team Championship with Bayley at WrestleMania 35. Fans have been eagerly for Banks’ return, and Extreme Rules could prove to be the perfect stage for her return, keeping in mind that the odds are against her best friend’s favor.

#2 No titles change hands

Any major title change seems unlikely with SummerSlam looming

Unlike the past few pay-per-views from WWE, Extreme Rules will have almost all the main brands’ titles be defended on the show.

Both the WWE Universal Championship and WWE Raw Women's Championship will be on the line in a mixed tag team Extreme Rules match where champions Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch will take on Baron Corbin and Lacey Evans.

Both Raw and SmackDown’s tag team titles will also be on the line during the event. SmackDown will also see both its major titles get defended at the event as Kofi Kingston will defend the WWE Championship against Samoa Joe, while Bayley will have the odds against her in a handicap match for the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship against Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross.

Extreme Rules will also see Drew Gulak defend the WWE Cruiserweight Championship against Tony Nese. Ricochet will have to face the odds as he will defend his United States Championship against AJ Styles, who will have The Club beside him.

While so many championships matches are scheduled for the event, WWE could surprise us by ensuring that all the current champions keep their titles in order to develop even stronger storylines heading into SummerSlam where more championships could change hands.

#1 The Undertaker finds a new challenger

What does the future hold for these four men?

At Super ShowDown, Shane McMahon defeated Roman Reigns thanks to interference from Drew McIntyre. This has led to an elaborate storyline involving Reigns, Shane, and Drew McIntyre.

At Stomping Grounds, Reigns decisively defeated McIntyre event though Shane tried his level best to cause distractions and get the result in the heel’s favor.

On the following Raw, Wild Card guest Reigns faced Shane and McIntyre in a handicap match where they dominated Reigns. As Shane went to the top rope to perform a Coast-to-Coast on Reigns, the lights went out. The Undertaker appeared and attacked both Shane and McIntyre.

A tag team match featuring Reigns and Undertaker against Shane and McIntyre was then scheduled for Extreme Rules, which was made a No Holds Barred match the following week.

While there seems to be no logical reason for The Undertaker’s involvement in this feud, it could lead to an interesting decision heading up to SummerSlam.

Since McIntyre has lost clean to Reigns more often than fans like, we could witness The Undertaker end the match with a tombstone to McIntyre, leading to a feud between the two men going into SummerSlam 2019.
