WWE Money in the Bank 2019: 4 biggest questions from the pay-per-view

Why would The Beast need a briefcase?
Why would The Beast need a briefcase?

The Money in the Bank pay-per-view was one of the most anticipated events of the year, and it certainly did not disappoint the fans in its major matches.

There were a total of six championship matches during the night, which was extended to seven after a surprising Money in the Bank cash-in was made.

On the other hand, the non-title matches were also quite decent, barring one of the main non-title matches from SmackDown which ended too quickly after such a major buildup.

At the end of the night, the WWE Universe must have been content with many of the outcomes, as we continue to have six separate babyface superstars holding the top titles of the company.

In this article, we will look at the 4 biggest questions from the event, and what they might mean for the superstars and the company in the weeks to come.

#4 Why was Elias fed to Roman Reigns

The entire rivalry seemed off from the beginning and could have worked better on Raw before both men were drafted to SmackDown Live.

Going into the event, this was probably the match with the most story and buildup, even though Becky Lynch, Lacey Evans, and Charlotte have been at it for weeks.

Fans expected everything from the match, from unfair calls to interferences. However, the match was over in a jiffy and laid waste to all the buildup and hype that both superstars had built around the match.

Reigns won the match convincingly, which does not ruin Elias’ reputation much, as he has always worked as a high-profile pay-per-view jobber on the main roster.

However, one wonders why Reigns needed this booking and if it actually does any good for the superstar in the long run, or was it just a filler till Reigns gets in the WWE Championship picture?

Another question is whether a win for Elias would have worked better, and the rivalry could have gone on to its final chapter at Super Show-Down.

#3 Was there a reason behind Joe’s quick loss?

Samoa Joe humiliated Rey Mysterio in just over a minute at WrestleMania 35, choking the all-time-great Superstar out to retain the United States Championship.

This was a booking that shocked many and brought forward rumors that Mysterio worked the match injured and hence it ended so quickly.

This Sunday, Mysterio got a chance to redeem himself as he sought revenge on The Destroyer and tried to win the title.

While we expected the match to be miles better than their WrestleMania affair, it wasn’t so as The future Hall of Famer scored the win and title in under two minutes, as the television cameras focused on the bloodied and stunned face of Joe.

Was this the result of Joe getting busted open and bleeding, which called for the officials to end the match early amid a controversial pin? Or was it all a botch after all, as Joe continued to attack his opponent after the loss?

#2 Were the refereeing botches deliberate?

The Money in the Bank ladder matches does not require a referee in the ring, as the superstars try to climb the ladder to get a hold of the briefcase rather than pin or submit each other.

However, all the other matches required referees to be in the ring and call the pins and submissions. This wasn’t done well at all last night.

In the match between The Miz and Shane McMahon, the referee broke up a pinfall as Shane had his foot on the ropes. In a steel cage setting, that rule does not apply.

In the United States Championship match, Samoa Joe’s shoulder wasn’t hitting the mat when the three-count was made, making the pin and the win controversial.

Similarly, the referee messed up a pinfall count at the ending stages of the match between Lacey Evans and Becky Lynch.

These were just a few of many major botches during the night and makes one wonder whether one or two of them were deliberate in order to carry on a storyline, or whether it was just a very bad night for the referees.

#1 Why does Brock Lesnar need the briefcase?

Last year, the biggest active wrestler in WWE won the Money in the Bank briefcase to became the Monster in the Bank. He wasted his opportunity on Brock Lesnar a number of months later and has since fallen down the ranks in WWE.

This year, the playing field was leveled as Sami Zayn took Strowman’s spot in the match, but was attacked prior to it, which left him unable to compete.

After the revelation, many fans wondered whether Strowman or Lars would take his spot, but it wasn’t until the end of the match that we found out who would take his place.

Brock Lesnar's music played and The Beast hit the ring. He tossed Ali from the top, scaled the ladder and retrieved the briefcase to win the match. It took him merely 30 seconds to do so after the other seven men battled for almost twenty minutes to take the briefcase home.

This raises only one question: is this win just to justify his match against Seth Rollins at the Super Show-Down? If that is so, it makes little sense as WWE could have easily gotten Paul Heyman to work up Rollins enough to accept a challenge from The Beast rather than have him cash in his briefcase at the event.

Brock Lesnar is one man who doesn’t need a briefcase to get opportunities in WWE, and him holding the briefcase makes the other seven competitors who took severe bumps during the match look like nothing.
