Kofi Kingston defends his WWE Championship for the first time on pay-per-view this weekend when he takes on Kevin Owens at Money in the Bank.

Kingston has already defended his title against Seth Rollins and Daniel Bryan over the past few weeks and is seen as one of the most popular Champions in WWE at present. The New Day member probably won't have the backing of his trio tonight since Big E is still injured and he won't need Xavier Woods at ringside unless Kevin Owens brings some friends of his own.

Owens and Kingston were once on the same page but the lack of heels on SmackDown Live meant that Owens was forced to turn on Kingston and step into the Championship picture in the build-up to tonight's show.

Kevin Owens has already challenged for the WWE Championship earlier this year back at Elimination Chamber and was unsuccessful when Bryan was Champion so it's unlikely that he will come out on top this time around.

Owens and Kingston have had quite the feud over the past few months, but Kingston worked hard to become Champion and is expected to retain this weekend. It will be interesting to see if there is any form of interference that could push the WWE Championship forward, but it's hard to see who would step into the picture heading into SummerSlam.

SmackDown has a lack of heels at present and since Daniel Bryan has already lost his rematch, it wouldn't make any sense for him to step back into the title picture. There are a number of names who could interfere with Big E being seen as one of the most obvious on this list, or WWE could decide to allow Kingston to defeat Kevin Owens clean like he did Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania. This one it's hard to predict.
