What’s the story?

Current WWE Champion AJ Styles recently spoke with Sky Sports in an exclusive interview and during the conversation, “The Phenomenal One” seemingly responded to the accolade of being labeled as the best professional wrestler in the world.

In case you didn’t know…

AJ Styles made his professional wrestling debut in the year 1998 and over the course of the past two decades “The Phenomenal One” has established himself as one of the greatest in-ring competitors of all time. Styles, who initially started wrestling in independent promotions such as Xcitement Wrestling Federation, World Wrestling All-Stars, and East Coast Wrestling Association.

However, as the years gradually progressed, AJ Styles started competing for some of the world’s biggest wrestling promotions and most notably under the Impact Wrestling (TNA) banner, where he is a former two-time World Heavyweight Champion. Throughout his career, AJ has also competed for top companies such as Ring of Honor where he has previously held the ROH Pure and ROH Tag Team Titles, New Japan Pro Wrestling where Styles has held the IWGP Heavyweight Title on two occasions and is also a former leader of the legendary faction, The Bullet Club.

In addition, AJ has also won various championships for top Independent promotions such as RevPro UK, PWG, and All Access Wrestling.

The heart of the matter

After having won several world titles for various wrestling promotions all around the globe, WWE Champion AJ Styles has constantly been in contention of being labeled as the “best pro wrestler in the world”, however, while recently speaking with Sky Sports, the current and two-time WWE Champion was evidently asked if he indeed ranks himself as the best pro wrestler in the entire world today.

Styles, who has previously won Wrestling Observer’s Wrestler of the Year award on two occasions, gave a humble response to this tricky question by claiming that he does not considers himself the best professional wrestler on the planet today, despite having won numerous world titles and accomplishments throughout his career and believes that there is still a lot to be learned in this business by "The Phenomenal One".

"No, I would not agree with that. I think there's still a lot to be learned by AJ Styles and you can't consider yourself to be the best when you've still got so much stuff to learn."

What’s next?

AJ Styles will defend his WWE Title next month in New Orleans at WrestleMania 34 in a dream match against the winner of the 2018 Men’s Royal Rumble match, Shinsuke Nakamura.

Author’s Take

In my opinion, AJ Styles will certainly go down as one of the greatest wrestlers to ever step foot on God’s Green Earth and to see such a humble response from one of the greatest pro wrestlers of this generation is truly amusing.
