What's the story?

Say what you want about WWE but It seems that the company used the Greatest Royal Rumble Match, the largest Royal Rumble Match ever with fifty entrants, as a way to give its Superstars who missed a spot on the main card at WrestleMania 34 a pay-day and some spotlight.

In case you didn't know...

The Greatest Royal Rumble event was an interesting event to say the least, it will unfortunately perhaps be best remembered for the incredible trip under the ring that Titus O'Neil took, but it also included a record-breaking run from Daniel Bryan, Braun Strowman breaking Roman Reigns' record for number of eliminations and several surprise returns and appearances.

The heart of the matter

However, one of the more interesting and better things about the Greatest Royal Rumble Match seems to be that it was used to give several WWE Superstars who weren't on the main card at WrestleMania 34 a chance to appear in a big pay-per-view level main event.

Only nine entrants in the match competed on the main card at WrestleMania 34 and they were as follows - Daniel Bryan, Randy Orton, Shane McMahon, Kurt Angle, Bobby Roode, Big E, Braun Strowman, Kevin Owens and Kofi Kingston.

That means that the other 41 entrants were not on the main card at 'Mania (h/t Cageside Seats). With 25 of them featuring in the Andre the Giant Battle Royale on the pre-show of WrestleMania.

Two of them were returns (Big Cass and Bobby Lashley), five were returning Superstars from the past (Mysterio, Jericho, Hornswoggle, Khali and Mark Henry), six were call-ups from NXT and 205 Live, two were at Mania but didn't wrestle (Xavier Woods and Elias) and finally there was the appearance from Hiroki Sumi.

What's next?

The Greatest Royal Rumble was definitely a mixed-bag of a show but overall I enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to see what the next show in Saudi Arabia will deliver and to find out whether or not we'll get a 'Greatest Hell in a Cell' or 'Greatest Money in the Bank'.

Author's take

I truly believe the WWE have looked after their talent here. Even the NXT call-ups like Tucker Night and Dan Matha were included because they were crucial in helping at the Saudi Arabian tryouts, and were rewarded with main roster debuts.
