And now he's going to WrestleMania as WWE Champion
And now he's going to WrestleMania as Champion

What's the story?

AJ Styles has come a long way from the independent circuit to the very top of WWE. He caught up with USA Today and spoke about not believing that he would be going into WrestleMania as Champion.

In fact, he never even believed that he would make it to WrestleMania, a few years ago. Styles also revealed why Charlotte Flair vs. Asuka was a special match.

In case you didn't know...

AJ Styles was the face of TNA, before making it to NJPW and becoming the top guy and the leader of the Bullet Club. He came to WWE and took the company by storm, becoming the WWE Champion in under a year. He's been the face of the SmackDown Live brand, for a long time now.

Styles has had two incredible WrestleMania matches, the first against Chris Jericho and the second against Shane McMahon.

The heart of the matter

Styles revealed that he believed he would never make it to WrestleMania, only a few years ago:

think there was a moment in my career where I just thought ‘well, the whole WrestleMania thing’s never going to happen for me. I get it and I understand it, I’ll move on.’ Now the opportunity to have two under my belt. I never would have believed it, especially going into WrestleMania as WWE Champion.

Moreover, he likened the Charlotte Flair vs. Asuka match to Styles vs. Nakamura:

Charlotte, definitely one of the best women’s performers in the WWE, and Asuka, of course, she’s no slacker either. You put these two in the ring…. It’s almost like the same build-up [to Nakamura-Styles]. It’s a match that I want to see, and now the opportunity of it finally happening is very exciting.

What's next?

The world will tune in, in just over a week when Shinsuke Nakamura and AJ Styles recreate their Wrestle Kingdom classic for WWE at WrestleMania 34.

Author's take

I would never have believed it myself. Nobody could doubt Styles' talent, but he always seemed like a guy content outside WWE.

I'm glad he's in WWE and he's one of the top guys in the company as well.
