WWE News: AJ Styles wants to make the US Title as relevant as the WWE Title

AJ Styles has big intentions

What’s the story?

WWE superstar AJ Styles has claimed that he wants to make the United States Championship as relevant as the WWE Championship. The former WWE Champion made these comments during the company’s ongoing European Tour.

In case you didn’t know...

Styles is all set to challenge Kevin Owens for the United States Championship at Backlash which some fans see as a major demotion from the main event scene. However, the program has been featured more prominently on television than the WWE Championship match between Jinder Mahal and Randy Orton.

The heart of the matter

The following comments were made by AJ during an interview with The Sun.

“I’m excited about it. I think the United States Championship is as big of a deal to me as the WWE Championship, I’m just not in line for that right now and that’s okay. I set goals and being U.S. Champion is one of those and I want to make that United States Championship as important as the WWE Championship.”

What’s next?

The bout between the two men will take place at Backlash, however, the next step on their journey will take place during the SmackDown Live show over in the United Kingdom. Nothing has been confirmed in regards to what the two men will be doing on the show, but if the last few weeks are anything to go by, they could well be the final segment above the WWE Title feud between Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal.

Author’s take

This is great to hear, as both the US Title and IC Titles are in desperate need of a revamp right now. Styles vs. Owens is a feud worthy of the main event picture, but we’d still like to see Orton vs Mahal close the show at Backlash purely out of respect for the WWE Championship. Plus, it could surprise a lot of people when it comes to the quality of the bout.
