WWE News: Alison Brie to star in Netflix's wrestling comedy show "Glow"

Alison Brie is entering the squared circle

A real Women’s revolution is happening in professional wrestling. Not just in the time given to the women to perform, the rebranding of the women from “Divas” to “Superstars”. It is the entire perspective in general, and the revolution continues on. The entire perspective of women in professional wrestling is changing drastically, and that can be seen even in characters such as Stephanie McMahon, who embody Women empowerment.

A recent small documentary show that looked into this was WWE 24: Women’s Evolution, which really tackled the issue the women in the business faced in and out of the ring, and also highlighted the significant progress they have made and continue to make.

Now, it looks like the idea of women in the wrestling business has interested people in the other media fields as well, as Jenji Kohan has picked up a Wrestling Comedy called GLOW which will star comedy and film star Alison Brie in the lead role and will be available on Netflix.

The Community star has been announced as the lead actor in Jenji Kohan’s comedy GLOW, according to the Hollywood Reporter. In the series, Brie will be cast as Ruth – the story of an aspiring actress whose life changes dramatically after finding herself in the world of women’s wrestling.

GLOW stands for Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling. It is based on the real-life story of the female wrestling promotion GLOW that was in its prime in the 1980s. It is said to be a 10-episode series, but there is no news on whether it will be a mini-series or a show whose renewal will be determined based on the figures and reception.

GLOW itself was created in 1986, and consisted of women who were not wrestlers, but rather actresses, models, dancers, stunt women, etc. who were all show business aspirants, hoping to break in via professional wrestling. However, that does not mean they did not face the struggles that female wrestlers faced at the time.

This will definitely be a very interesting series to watch, as there has yet to be a television series on female wrestlers, and it will be even more interesting given that it will be set in an era where female wrestling was struggling, and women were barely given opportunities in wrestling except in valet roles.

Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling, 1986

The original GLOW was filmed for about four seasons, between 1986 and 1990. It had come back in various forms, such as: Powerful Women of Wrestling (1986–1990), Ladies Sports Club (1990–1991), and Women of Wrestling (2000–2001), among others. David McLane was the man behind the concept of all these.
