What's the story?

WrestleMania 34 was the scene of the shocking end to Asuka's winning streak.

Charlotte and Asuka faced each other for the SmackDown Women's Championship, at WrestleMania 34. It was Charlotte's Women's Title on the line against Asuka's undefeated streak.

The streak had continued from Asuka's debut in NXT when she defeated her first opponent since signing with the WWE.

In case you didn't know...

Asuka earned the right to face the Champion of her choice when she won the first ever Women's Royal Rumble.

She held off on her decision until Charlotte defeated Ruby Riott at Fastlane, after which she announced her intentions. She interrupted Charlotte's celebration and challenged her for the SmackDown Women's Championship at WrestleMania, instead of choosing the Raw Women's Champion Alexa Bliss.

Asuka's winning streak began from her debut in NXT and went on to surpass the winning streak that Goldberg had in WCW long back.

The buildup of the match surrounded the Streak as it seemed no one could defeat Asuka and bring the streak to an end.

The heart of the matter

Asuka's streak came to a shocking end when Charlotte was able to reverse the Asuka lock and put Asuka in a Figure Eight Leglock instead. To everyone's surprise, the match ended with Charlotte picking up the clean win as Asuka would tap out.

The match was a competitive one, and hard hitting as well with huge spots. At one point Asuka hit Charlotte with a suplex from the apron onto the ringside area. There were submissions and reversals until Charlotte was able to lock in the Figure Eight Leglock that ended it all.

After the bout, Asuka congratulated Charlotte on her win saying, "Charlotte was ready for Asuka".

On a side note, this is the second time that a New Orleans WrestleMania has seen the end of a streak, as Undertaker was defeated at WrestleMania for the first time by Lesnar at the last one.

What's next?

With Asuka's streak coming to an end, it will be interesting to see how WWE book her. She may continue on another dominating run, but this gives WWE some room to book her.

Author's take

The fallout from this match will be seen on both Raw and SmackDown, as Asuka and Charlotte will react on their respective brands. With the streak at an end, Asuka's mysterious character no longer has the same mystique, and it is up to her to bounce back.
