What’s the story?
In a recent interview with Andrew Khellah, former WWE Superstar Billy Gunn spoke on various topics including working with Terry Funk and Mick Foley, ripping ZZ in Tough Enough, being fired by WWE in his last stint, his failed singles run in 1999, memories of Chyna, Bart Gunn getting set-up against Eric ‘Butterbean’ Esch, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, whether he’d return to WWE, and his relationship with Triple H.
In case you didn’t know...
Billy Gunn (real name- Monty Kip Sopp) performed for WWE from 1993-2004 and 2012-15. In November of 2015, he was fired from WWE owing to a steroid test failure on his part at a power-lifting event.
The heart of the matter
In an interview that got a bit confrontational at first, Gunn seemed to lighten up and give his take on a myriad of topics. He praised Terry Funk and Mick Foley; whereas on him giving ZZ a hard time during Tough Enough, Billy stated that he doesn’t have anything personal against the man, but simply disliked his laziness.
He refused to comment on being fired from WWE but did state that he has no regrets about not having a successful singles run with WWE. Besides, here’s what he had to say about his former DX stable-mate Chyna-
"I don't give a rats a** what anybody else thinks. Don't care. She was one of my best friends in the business other than Brian (Road Dog). Chyna had her thing that she did, and that does not make her any less of a person than what she was. She was super awesome."
Furthermore, on Bart Gunn’s shoot-fight against Butterbean, he added that Bart was simply a tough son-of-a-gun but not a trained fighter. Billy Gunn also gave his take on The Rock, insinuating that the Brahma Bull is just the entire package, and that Rocky made complete use of his natural talent. On the controversial questions regarding him potentially returning to WWE and his current relationship with Triple H, Billy added-
"Sure I would. I love coaching. I had a great relationship with almost everybody in the (WWE) Performance Center. Define relationship? No, no, no. I text him (Triple H), and his secretary texts me back. But that is all good. He is a busy guy."
What’s next?
Billy Gunn competed in NJPW (New Japan Pro Wrestling) after his departure from WWE, and presently performs on the independent circuit.
Author’s take:
I think it’s safe to assume that Billy Gunn and Triple H aren’t of the best of terms right now, and regardless of Billy’s failed drug test that led to him being released from WWE, in my opinion, the company owes him better than this.
As a huge fan of the old D-Generation X, I’d love to see the two of them mend fences and possibly see him reinstated as a coach down at the WWE Performance Center.
