The Glorious One battle against Mike & Maria's Power of Love!

What’s the story?

Before SmackDown Live went on the air, the blue brand's live audience in attendance was treated to a glorious performance. In a dark match, Bobby Roode took on Mike Kanellis, who was joined at ringside by his wife, Maria.

In case you didn’t know…

After losing the NXT Championship at TakeOver: Brooklyn III, Bobby Roode made his debut for SmackDown Live on the August 22nd episode. Since his match against Drew McIntyre was the first singles loss of his WWE career, there are high expectations for his prospects on Tuesday nights.

Being absent from the live broadcast could easily have been worrisome for Roode, but this video package that aired on the main show hyping the Glorious Era was a reminder of how important he is.

The heart of the matter

In an exclusive WWE.com backstage interview, Bobby Roode offered his thoughts about wrestling in the dark match of this show.

"It's always special, it's always glorious when you get an opportunity to perform in front of a WWE audience - the WWE Universe.Tonight, I made the SmackDown Live crowd feel just a little bit more glorious."

From the short footage that was offered, Roode highlighted the contest with a blockbuster off the second rope. Maria appeared concerned for her husband at ringside. Ultimately, Mike Kanellis suffered the pinfall after taking a Glorious DDT in the middle of the ring.

What’s next?

Judging by the pre-recorded video package that aired instead of the actual match, Roode appears to be biding his time until a major program opens up for him. It's likely that he could find himself in a program for a singles championship. An AJ Styles vs. Bobby Roode feud for the United States Championship would be fun.

Author’s take

It's a shame that Roode competed in a match that wasn't showcased for those of us watching at home. However, Bobby versus Mike Kanellis isn't exactly a major marquee matchup so it's not a huge loss that we missed out.
