What's the story?

Braun Strowman's anger cost him his opportunity at the Universal Championship as Vince McMahon made a decision on this week's WWE RAW.

In his place, Finn Balor became the new number one contender for Brock Lesnar's title after winning a fatal four way in the main event of Monday Night Raw.

In case you didn't know...

Strowman's Universal Championship match was cancelled by Vince McMahon after the Monster Among Men damaged McMahon's limousine while he was trying to attack Baron Corbin.

The first hour of the show revolved around McMahon making the announcement for the match, which led to him coming to the ring to announce the new challenger for the title.

The heart of the matter

John Cena, Drew McIntyre, Baron Corbin and Finn Balor would make their way to the ring before McMahon could make an announcement, which led to him booking a fatal four way to determine the new challenger.

Jinder Mahal would speak to McMahon backstage and ask for the opportunity to be added to the match. McMahon gave Mahal the option to challenge a wrestler to a match and enter the fatal four way in their place if he won, which lead to Mahal choosing Balor.

Mahal and Balor's match took place in the second hour and begun after the former WWE Champion attacked Balor before the match.

Despite the pre-match assault, Balor managed to beat Mahal with the Coup De Grace and moved on to the main event.

The match lasted about 15 minutes, but ended with Cena landing an AA on Corbin, McIntyre hitting the Claymore Kick on Cena and Balor hitting the Coup De Grace to win the title shot at the Rumble.

What's next?

Balor's upcoming match against Lesnar will be his third Universal Championship match since SummerSlam 2016 when he won the title, but was forced to relinquish it the next day due to injury.

Roman Reigns wrestled Finn Balor the night after he won the Universal Championship last year, but the former NXT Champion was unable to win the title.

Balor versus Lesnar was not something fans thought they would be getting for the Royal Rumble, but now the expectation for their match will be to reach the quality that CM Punk and Daniel Bryan were able to get out of The Beast Incarnate.
