What's the story?

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones is busy promoting his upcoming UFC 235 title fight against Anthony Smith. During UFC 235 media day, Jones was asked to choose between a fight against Brock Lesnar or Daniel Cormier and the 205 lbs king found no difficulty in picking a showdown against the current WWE Universal Champion.

In case you didn't know...

After a protracted failed drug test saga, Bones returned to the Octagon in December 2018 and captured the vacant Light Heavyweight strap by defeating Alexander Gustaffson.

The polarising fighter is in no mood to rest as he is scheduled to take on #3 ranked Light Heavyweight Anthony Smith at UFC 235 this coming Sunday. As for Lesnar, the Beast Incarnate was expected to leave WWE and face Daniel Cormier in a Heavyweight fight this year. However, Lesnar got tied up with WrestleMania duty while Cormier himself was bogged down with injuries.

The former UFC Heavyweight Champion is said to make his way back to the UFC once he finishes his WWE commitments and if DC isn't fit by that time, there is only one plausible outcome.

The heart of the matter

Jones said that he would stand to gain more if he fights Lesnar as the Beast brings a different audience into the picture. Special thanks to MMAJunkie for the following transcript. "People have already seen me make ‘DC’ cry twice already. I’ve got nothing against that guy. Let him have his heavyweight dominance,” said Jones.

He was cautious while talking about the potential fight against DC at Heavyweight. He claimed that it would be a big risk to his health as many consider Cormier to be the greatest Heavyweight of all time.

“The reason why I think it would cost more for me is because Daniel Cormier is considered by most people, by some people I should say, as the greatest of all-time,” Jones said. “And to fight the greatest of all-time when he’s weighing 30 pounds more than me, it’s dangerous no matter who you are. I want to make it worth my while because ultimately my health is on the line, " continued Jones.

Bones added that he would only consider facing DC for the third time if the money is right and said that the UFC shouldn't have a monetary issue as the company was just taken over for $4.2 billion.

What's next?

The champion is the odds-on favourite heading into the main event title fight against Smith, which will take place at the T-Mobile Arena on March 2nd, 2019.

While it should be an easy victory for Jones in an ideal world, anything can happen in MMA. An upset will severely dent Jones' hopes of landing a big-money fight against Lesnar or Cormier!
