WWE News: Bruno Sammartino's cause of death revealed
The Italian Superman passed away at the age of 82.
What’s the story?
WWE Hall of Famer and all-time great Bruno Sammartino, passed away on April 18, 2018. A cause of death has now been revealed.
In case you didn’t know...
Sammartino was the longest reigning WWE Champion of all time, holding it for more than 11 years, or 4,040 days, over two reigns.
Bruno and WWE were at odds for years, all coming from Bruno's side. He hated the direction WWE had taken, shortly before his retirement in 1987. WWE had attempted to mend fences with him for years, including trying to induct him into the WWE Hall of Fame for years. In fact, Bruno was one of the first names WWE thought of for the returning class of 2004, but he declined, but he was finally inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013.
Bruno had issues with his heart for several years and underwent heart surgery in 2011.
The heart of the matter
Dave Meltzer released the cause of Bruno Sammartino's death on the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Meltzer reports that Sammartino's death was due to multiple organ failure which stemmed from heart issues.
He was said to be in and out of hospital in recent months, which he went in lengths to keep private and out of public eye.
Bruno Sammartino's funeral was held April 22 in his hometown of Ross Township, PA. WWE has aired various tributes to him on TV and the WWE Network ever since his passing.
The death of one of the all-time greats is never easy for a wrestling fan to take. Bruno's style probably wouldn't wow the modern day WWE audience, but he was the best in the world during a time where violence, flips and sports entertainment were not necessary. Bruno will be sorely missed.
