What’s the story?

As per The UK Sun, Conor McGregor is reportedly in talks with the WWE for a match at Wrestlemania 34.

Apparently, McGregor is a huge fan of professional wrestling as noted by sources close to the ‘Notorious’ Irishman, the UFC Lightweight Champion has drawn influence from The Rock and Ric Flair for the trash-talk and fight promotion aspects of his persona.

Additionally, it was revealed that McGregor, who grew up watching the aforementioned WWE legends, has always wanted to try his hand at pro-wrestling, and is now indeed discussing a big money matchup with WWE for next year's edition of the Showcase of the Immortals.

In case you didn’t know…

Conor McGregor is widely regarded as one of the best fight promoters and fighters in the world.

The brash UFC star is no stranger to the WWE either and has engaged in considerable banter, going back and forth with several WWE Superstars, including his trash talk against John Cena and Sheamus in the past.

The heart of the matter:

If one is to believe the buzz in the professional wrestling and MMA communities, Conor McGregor has crafted his public image, learning from top WWE self-promoters such as The Rock and ‘The Nature Boy’ Ric Flair.

Speaking of which, the source close to McGregor emphasized the following regarding his rumoured WWE match:

“This is something he’s always wanted to do. The WWE guys have asked him to do shows before with them but the timing was never really right.”

“But this time it looks like a deal is going to be locked into place. He has some things to tie up in the UFC before he can do anything else but this is a big money deal so I can’t see him turning it down."

What’s next?

As noted by UFC President Dana White after the conclusion of UFC 216 this past weekend, Undisputed UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor is mandated to defend his belt against Interim Champion Tony Ferguson.

Should McGregor refuse to face the aforementioned Ferguson, the UFC reserves the right to strip him of the Undisputed title. Both WWE and Conor are yet to officially announce any plans regarding a match at Wrestlemania 34.

Author’s take

Conor McGregor is a true master of the promotional game and, much like WWE czar Vince McMahon, he knows how to draw eyeballs wherever he goes.

A Notorious matchup at WrestleMania would undoubtedly draw millions in revenue.
