WWE News: Cruiserweight Championship Match for Greatest Royal Rumble officially set

Can the Lucha
Can Cedric Alexander withstand the high flying assault of Kalisto at GRR?

What's the story?

Cedric Alexander's title win at WrestleMania 34 was a great moment for 205 Live. After months and months of the belt being yanked away from him at the last second, he finally captured the gold that had been eluding him for so long.

Now, we know who his first defence will be against, as Alexander looks to defend his WWE Cruiserweight Championship at the Greatest Royal Rumble this Friday.

In case you didn't know...

Cedric Alexander was attacked by Buddy Murphy on the 205 Live after WrestleMania 34, with the implication that the two would take each other on at the next PPV. However, Murphy would fail to make weight, being just a few pounds over 205. With Murphy ousted temporarily from 205 Live, Alexander needed a new #1 contender.

Drake Maverick decided to have a Gauntlet Match on 205 Live this past week, to determine the new #1 contender. The competitors were Drew Gulak, Kalisto, Mustafa Ali, Tony Nese, and TJP.

The heart of the matter

After almost an hour long Gauntlet Match, the final two competitors were Drew Gulak and Kalisto. Gulak had eliminated Mustafa Ali and Tony Nese previously.

Even though he was exhausted, Gulak managed to almost put Kalisto away, before being hit with a Salida del Sol. Kalisto picked up the victory, earning the right to fight Cedric Alexander at Greatest Royal Rumble for the Cruiserweight Championship.

What's next?

Kalisto has already tasted Championship gold before, as he is already a one-time Cruiserweight Champion, winning it from Enzo Amore in late 2017.

The Lucha Sensation will look to recapture that title on Friday in Saudi Arabia. However, the Champ doesn't expect the 'Age of Alexander' to end any time soon.

Author's take

Since January, nothing that has involved the Cruiserweights has been bad. Every match has been enthralling, every show has been must-watch.

Kalisto might not have been the guy everyone wanted to win, but personally, I'm excited to see these two tear the house down on Friday. With Kalisto looking to take Lucha House Party to the top of the division, Cedric Alexander has a great first challenger at the Greatest Royal Rumble.
