What’s the story?

WWE veteran Chris Jericho was recently in interaction with respected Pro Wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer, during the latest edition of Talk is Jericho.

While being in conversation with each other, Jericho and Meltzer revealed that at one point of his career ‘The Heart Break Kid’ Shawn Michaels was supposed to face The Rock, however, the match never occurred due to Dwayne Johnson refusing to work Michaels.

In case you didn’t know…

The Rock and Shawn Michaels are arguably two of the greatest legends to ever step foot into the wrestling business. The tension between Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart was rising steadily during the year 1997, prior to their match against each other at Survivor Series.

At one point of his career, Bret Hart was originally slated to defeat a young, up and comer Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson via the Sharpshooter at one event, but Hart refused to defeat the youngster, that is The Rock This reportedly upset Shawn Michaels and Triple H who wasn’t a fan of the Rock because he posed a threat to HBK and HHH.

The heart of the matter

While speaking with Chris Jericho on the latest episode of TIJ, Dave Meltzer pointed out that upon his return to the WWE in the early 2000s, Michaels was originally scheduled to work in a match against The Rock. However, as noted by Meltzer, Rock refused to work against The Heart Break Kid even though this was a dream match for a lot of fans.

The apparent reason why this match never occurred is that this stemmed back to the things Michaels did years prior when The Rock was beginning his run in the WWE during the early attitude era days.

What’s next?

HBK has been making one-off sporadic appearances for the WWE, meanwhile, The Rock is currently busy with his life in the Hollywood. Michaels’ last appearance in the WWE was this past week on Raw’s 25th Anniversary special episode, whereas, it has certainly been a while since we saw The Rock step foot in a WWE ring.

Author’s Take

A match between Rock and Shawn Michaels is certainly one of the biggest dream matches that never came true for the WWE fans and I believe that these two men would’ve certainly put up a five-star performance if they ever squared off against each other.
