WWE News: How Randy Orton's Twitter rant on indie marks began

The current WWE Champion, the “Viper” Randy Orton

What’s the story?

The Twitter universe caught fire over the weekend based off of a retweet by current WWE Champion Randy Orton. It would turn into a huge war of words between fans and wrestlers of the indie promotions and fans of the WWE. The war began following this tweet from Rip Rogers, which was then re-tweeted by the Viper:

In case you didn’t know...

Rip Rogers is the current head trainer for Ohio Valley Wrestling (a former developmental territory of the WWE). He had a 23-year career with promotions such as Calgary Stampede Wrestling, WCW, and Ohio Valley Wrestling. He would be forced to retire in 2000 after being hit by a car at the age of 48.

The heart of the matter

Wrestlers such as current Ring Of Honor Six Man Tag Champion Bully Ray would respond to Rip Rogers and Randy Orton’s tweets. Check out Bully Ray’s response below:

Orton would then respond hilariously with the following tweet:

If you follow Bully on Twitter you know that he likes to stir the pot and have some fun while doing so. So it wasn’t surprising when he chose to respond with the tweet below:

Orton would later issue an “apology” with this post:

What’s next?

Orton has his sights set on the WWE Championship match with Jinder Mahal at WWE Backlash this Sunday. Expect to see a final showdown between the two competitors on the go-home show of SmackDown Live this Tuesday.

Author’s take

Orton’s tweets here were pure gold. Especially his “apology”, as that made me laugh.

He was basically agreeing with Rip Rogers had to say, which then, of course, got under the skin of several indie fans. That would lead Orton to then have a little fun at their expense.
